Default Which Lens is suitable ???

    Dear all,

    Need some advice here....

Will be travelling to Japan for next month, currently using Canon 500D with kit lens 18mm-55mm.

Not too sure if this lens is sufficient enough for some scenary take or should I invest on some lens like the Ultra Wide or the Zoom lens?

See lor, from your past shooting experience, what do you think the 18-55 been lacking. If you've no idea but still wanna get a new lens, I'd say UWA anytime, I can only imagine the sceneries you can capture in Japan. Have fun.
Ultra Wide or the Zoom lens?
BTW, any lens which allows you to zoom is called a zoom lens but I reckon you meant tele lens.

How about a 18-200mm super zoom lens?

You meant a telephoto lens, or a lens that has a longer reach than the human eye right?

In any case, here's a thought. Do you find yourself constantly at the 18mm end wishing that you can go wider, or at 55mm end wishing you have a further reach? Then you can decide what lens you need more.

You should, an all round lens is best suited for travelling photogrpahy (saved u the hassel of changing lens and travel light)

But is it worth it to purchase this lens just for this trip? If you ask me, I'd say no in a pinch.

Your kit lens will suffice for most scenery shots.

IMO, if you not sure the lens is enough, you may not really need another lens.
anyway, as rendition, have you experience any lacking with your kit lens (i.e you want zoom for something far away / want to take more things in one photo)? if you cannot feel any, you probably don't need new lens...

My usual advice, if really need the extra reach and already have the 18-55, might as well get the 55-250 and keep the 18-55. Save some money.

The hassle of changing lenses is over exaggerated.

You won't get much for that. The majority of cameras is sold as kit, so each comes with a kit lens like yours and the 2nd hand market is saturated. Since you have no idea about your shooting style and immediate requirements you better stick with your current equipment. UWA is nice but still it needs skills to use. Lenses are not for countries but for certain shooting styles.

My traveling kit is 400D with Tokina 11-16 2.8, 50 1.4 and 135 f/2. And I almost never used the 50. The tokina usually get used 85% of the time with the 135 used when I want to capture details or sneaking a candid portrait.

Thanks everyone for the advice ....really appreciate it.

Guess the limitation to my current lens (18-55mm) I found is "how much" can be taken in the picture I taken.

So that means you need a wider lens?

but if you only bring the wide angle , you'll only bring back very wide landcapy shots, what about the closeup of people there, details on very intricate architecture? ok, just saying...

get the 18-200. it will cover whatever you need, wide-angle and telephoto,

however i will never travel with that lens, it's too heavy for me.

i'd take the 18-55 hands down, anytime
