    Default Why gaffer your camera?

What is the reasons behind? Show that you are old bird, kiasu, posers? Or to really protect your precious camera from damage?

If you so a search for "why gaffer" you will get many results.

But the quick summary is that most will do it to protect the lens/body. But wildlife photogs may use it to add camo to their white/silver lenses so as not to scare the animals away.

I believe not much ppl actually into wildlife photography right? I still remember a friend of mine go and "ba-zhang" his camera and Lens until one fine day his Nikkor Lens got the gaffer thingy got inside it. He wasted quite some money to have his Lens fixed. Till now this story still remain a joke. When I think of gaffer, reminded me of this self owned story.

I gaffer mine only when overseas - if trekking, protects the lens and body from scratches; if holidaying in cities, make it less ostensible... hopefully

I gaffer to prevent scratches. Agree that sometimes there are some stubborn residue.

Read somewhere that it's recommended to remove and re-gaffer every 6 months. In fact, one complained that the paint on his lens came off with the gaffer tape.

    1. I am a rough user. Therefore certain parts do get scratched more readily than others. So I Gaffer particularly those areas.
    2. Look more seasoned, maybe.
    3. For the self-perceived delusion that making the camera & lens look old & tattered plus covering up the brand and all shiny words on the body and lens MAY help reduce the risk of theft.

I dont like to bandage my camera but I really hate camera talk when out shooting with other people .... sometimes even subjects like to ask "Why you dont use Nikon? They take better pictures"

And I HATE gaffer tape..... the thing is like a bad cloth with loose strands of threads coming out after a while

But I do hide logos and brand-names as much as I can

I use a little acrylic art sticker that they sell for $3 per 50cm (30+cm wide) ... cut small little pieces and just mask over anything that hints at a brand name

Indirectly advertising for brands especially after I paid for it is a little pet peeve of mine

Even the shoulder strap and the lens cap .... I use a plain black one for both

I just allow for Smiley which is a great ice-breaker

Ha ha the camera's is filthy and in need of a wipe-down.... getting filty with my oily face planted against the LCD and back kekeke

    Say 'Hi' to Smiley

..... yes, even bottom plate dont give chance.....

Used a little piece of velvet sticky

Gaffering the entire camera like an Egyptian mummy is also not a good idea..... today's cameras are loaded with electronics and fitted with much larger batteries than the old days of film.... Turned On, this generates alot of heat under shooting/recording/viewing conditions.... the body itself acts as a heat sink.... let that heat sink do its work of getting rid of excessive heat.... which prolongs life of said camera...... so dont gaffer too much

from my past experience, fungus grows on gaffers...

lucky it was my tripod that i gaffered, and not my gears.

probably due to the rain or sweat ...
