I purchased one on behalf of a client once, but he said it can't be used in Singapore.

Oh, how so? I saw some people use the Kindle 2 on the MRT the other day, seems very good.

it is possible to acquire a Kindle from Amazon using some creative steps if you're willing to have the patience.

The bigger issue was being unable to purchase the ebooks thru Amazon as they would only take payment from a credit card issued by a US Bank.

However this Singaporean blogster has listed out step by step on how to acquire it...including how to purchase the ebooks. Kudos to him, but just seems too long a process for me...so I'll just sit on the fence and see how it pans out.

    IMHO....

Good : Sleek, convenient, you'll save $ in the long run, need not lug a few books around to read, many e-books to choose from, can store more than 1000 titles, need not have to worry about books turning yellow.

Bad: It's still nice to flip through good old paperbacks, troublesome to purchase e-books, needs battery to operate, decrease the profits of books publishers, can't share a good book with your friends, strain your eyes.

Will you kindly post your review after you purchase it?

    1. Kindle is not the only ebook reader out there.

    2. One of the convenience/advantage of Kindle is the wireless feature and seamless purchase of ebooks from Amazon. However, there are also tons of ebook stores out there, which you can purchase and sync to your device.

    3. Of course, if u buy Kindle, and don't use the wireless/Amazon feature, then its just a normal ebook reader. In which case, there're quite a number of other choices in the market, though none in Singapore directly.

    4. One of the better ones (IMO) is the Sony ebook reader. Google the PRS-505.

A few comments abt cowmera's comments on the 'Bad' :
    - troublesome to purchase ebooks.
How troublesome is online shopping? if you say more limited in choice, perhaps so. but definitely not troublesome.
    - strain your eyes
Well, you haven't used an e-ink ebook reader device....

Here is a brief comparo of Amazon's Kindle 2 vs. the Sony PRS-700 done by Cnet, so take it for what it's worth.

Hmm...i enjoy online shopping but i feel that anything that involves vpost is troublesome!

I don't deny that i never held a kindle or an e-book in my hands before but i was told by an eye specialist that anything that involves a screen is more strenuous to the eyes? Do enlighten me though on ebooks.

It's not like a conventional LCD screen per se, doesn't need a backlight, no fear of harsh sunlight causing glare, the E-ink technology tries to replicate the readability of the surface as if it's printed on paper.

The original Kindle models work on EV-DO networks, not UMTS or HS*PA networks.

You should not have used Vpost for they will tell you they dont ship items with built-in batteries.

    Your kindle is a goner.

    This is incorrect.

I purchased Kindle books via my Singapore CC. They only need an US address, which I was happy to furnish. Still retained my Singapore address as an alternative.
