Default 2nd hand Nikkor 80-400mm or New Sigma 150-500mm

    Hi,

Thinking to buying either of these lens, if i buy brand new Nikkor cost about 2800S$ and Sigma Cost 1650S$. But someone selling Nikkor 80-400mm @ same price of Sigma but no warranty.
Now i am not sure which one to get New Sigma come with 2.5 year warranty and if i get 2nd hand it have no warranty.
    Any suggestion?

There is a fair bit of difference in range too. Are you buying lenses based on cost or based on whether you need the range?

I don't think nikkor 80-400 is S$2800 any more. Check the market price it should be less than 2k for bnew. Correct if I am wrong.

So would the 400mm to 500mm difference be of a significance to you? If I were you I'd be choosing the lens that has a range that suits me more, rather than choosing a lens based on cost.

newbie here too in birding ...try to get the further reach possible as focal length is always something you will always want more in birding .

I also poor birder using a tamron 200-500mm . Can try a 400mm f5.6 prime a very good beginner lens . Do consider a good tripod too...

Happy shopping and hope to see you in the field soon

choosing the nikon 80-400 over the sigma 150-500 or over the tam 200-500 or sigma 50-500 is not just a question abt whether there is VR or no VR. You also shouldnt be determining ur choice by price. The questions is not so simple.

The most important factor you should be looking at is the image quality. After all, at the end of the day, regardless of the price and vr or no vr, wat do u aim to achieve? u wan to achieve nice good image rite?

Out of all the lens, the choice is very clear, there is only the nikon 80-400. Even though the price might be higher than the rest, at least u know after u get it you are getting the best image quality.

Imagine after u get the tammy 200-500, or sigma 150-500 only to regret later on tat the image quality is not tat fantastic, and u end up selling them away to buy the nikon 80-400. End up u got to sell the tammy and sigmas at a loss and buy nikon at a high price again! No point rite?

if u cant afford the nikon now, then just save up! wait a couple of months then!
09 Oct 09 officially marks the date I become a canon convert.

Point well noted. I think i will wait for a while and may be get a Nikor.
I didn't do enough research before buying D90, should have bought Canon as they have MP-e65 and CANON EF 400MM F5.6 L USM at reasonable price.

Most birders will tell you a tripod set up is just as important as your long lens. Shooting at 400 - 500mm handheld is no joke; you can easily lose the frame, just as easily as you can cause blur even with VR because of the magnification offered by that focal length.
