for lenses, Tamron 17-50 is a good start.
    Plus EFS55-250.

If more money, can get Sigma 50-150 f2.8

    Or EF70-200.

For telephoto, depends on your shooting style.

Since TS is entering the world of DSLR for the first time, it would be hard for him to tell us what he's gonna use it for. It's a journey that only he can go thru it himself. Just be prepare to spend loads of $$$ There's no going back..

A good all around lens to start with would be the Tamron 17-50f2.8.

May the BBB Gods be with you...

50mm 2.8 would be 1 of the 1st few lenses to get, to explore into the world of DOF~ and not forgetting it's affordable too!

If you got the money try to buy the following lenses:

    1. EF 50mm F/1.8 Mk II.

Reason: Good value portrait lenses. You can easily produce blur backgrounds.

    2. EF-S 18-55 mm F/3.5-5.6 IS

Reason: Good range 29 mm wide to mild telephoto 88mm. May also good for portrait shots (though a bit challenging) and landscapes.

    3. EF-S 55-250mm F/4-5.6 IS

Reason: The el-cheapo but good performing zoom lens (equiv to 400mm on the extreme end). The IS is invaluable.

    4. (if you can afford) EF-S 10-22mm F/3.5 to 4.5

Reason: Ultra wide angle. Shooting sharp wide landscapes.

    Cheers

opps! yes, it's the f1.8 lens... i usually use it at f2.8, thus 2.8 came to mind 1st.
