Indeed... compared to last year's competition this year's standard is higher.
Theme is much more difficult . and I thought rebound and rejoice is hard enough ... now this is worse

Ok, this is just my opinion. When I saw the topic for theme 2, the only idea that came to my mind is a guy/girl jumping into the sky in a flying V pose.
I want to be more creative and try not to restrict myself to a 'jumping man' photo, cause I don't really like to take 'portraits', but nothing comes into mind.
    Maybe I'm not creative enough

Look at all the results for theme 2 and you'll know what I mean.

I would say theme 1 is much better, less restrictive and more room for creativity

yes i understand what you mean
thats what most ppl will think of when they see the topic of theme 2
    I thought of that too
but now thinking back after what you said,im thinking that there could be other things which could represent Rebound and Rejoice, since its open to one's own interpretation like say maybe a burst of fireworks?

Fireworks is a good idea. But 'rejoice' is a very human emotion, so I feel the restriction of human participation is quite unavoidable for that theme

    Creativity is restricted but oneself

The theme is there, it up to one to interpret. If one can bring forth his/her interpretation in a visually stunning way, will have an edge over the others.

If one tries to do what he/she thinks the judges/organiser would like see - then I don't think it may work

There is really no need for human participation to be present.
Objects can personifies humans, fireworks are one example as listed above. Metaphorically, anything can be humanified or at least relates to something of human element.

I don't see how the themes are genre-biased. When interpretations are left solely to the photographer, it is virtually impossible to justify that remark you made.
It may be more difficult , but it is not restricting at all.

Come to think of it, the winner of any competition is just a reflection of the judges tastes and perspectives, not so much the photographer.

Maybe the winners and the judges do feel the feel way and that why they been selected.

Everyone has their own point of view, and ironically, because of this, it is pointless.

    not really true .
    if ,
there's a set of "marking scheme" and feedback from the judges.
    e.g.
set criteria : like grading method for certain things that they will look out for in a photo. (not like feelings, as i can feel differently for what i saw)
or give some comments why that photo that got first prize, got first.

this way, newbie photographer like me will benefit like never before.

    F) Judging

    1. A Panel of Judges comprised of the ClubSNAP Administrators, representatives from Nikon Singapore, selected individuals of the Moderator team and independent distinguished photographers invited by ClubSNAP or Nikon Singapore will sit in on every judging.

    2. The decision of the Panel of Judges is final.

    3. The organizers will not enter into any correspondence regarding the judging or organization of the competition.

In summary, this sld be more transparent.

    my 2cents worth .
Always a pleasant smile when we look back at our own photos.
