You get bug fixes through Apple's software update.

To give you some perspective on optimization, Vista was and is bloatware. Lots of crap that drain the system resources. Windows 7 is an optimized release of Vista, and I'm sure M$ will charge you a pretty penny for it when it comes out. Definitely going to be WAYYYY more than the paltry S$48 that Apple's charging for Snow Leopard.

So you're basically paying for an optimized release of Leopard. At this day and age of obscene amount of bloatware, I'm just a sucker for optimized code
I'm getting the Windows 7 upgrade CD for free. :P

    depend on which OS.

For Windows, better do a clean install.

For Mac OS X, no problem.

do you want your Mac to run faster?

I believe no one want to run a 10.4 or 10.5 that is slower than 10.6

Ha, Vista is a OsX wannabe, a beautified Win ME; Win7 a beautified XP.
I'm amazed how Snow Leopard OS will take up less space than the previous OS. Having said that, I'm still with a XP desktop, Vista 17" & XP netbook... bo pian can't throw away all these machines.

Apple could be partially using zfs (zettabyte file system) in Snow Leopard and hence the smaller footprint, later version of OS X will fully be in zfs.

Nope, no ZFS in this release. Probably for future releases.

ZFS has been available as read-only in every leopard install, and as read-write for everyone via a developer beta. The big news is that Apple is much more transparent now about what they plan to do with it (boot support etc). The read-only portion in Leopard has been pretty well tested and is figured as solid.
It's great to see that ZFS is maturing on the mac.

    /System/Library/Filesystems/zfs.fs
    /System/Library/Extensions/zfs.readonly.kext
    /usr/lib/libzfs.dylib
    /usr/sbin/zfs
    /usr/share/man/man8/zfs.8
    /usr/share/man/man8/zfs.util.8

Probably just read_only support so we won't complain about getting at ZFS stuff from our old machines, etc.

I thought small foot print is because no need to support PowerPC codes? Hence, all the PPC related codes all took out.

Yes, could be part of the reason.

I know. But not in Snow Leopard. Quite an unpopular move by Apple to remove any remnants of it.

Another reason is code re-use from the now well-matured Cocoa classes. The Finder re-write is a good example.

If we upgraded to this new OS, would we need to reinstall all the softwares like Microsoft Word etc? Would our data still be intact? I hope i don't have to reinstall all the programmes

i think now the code is optimised to run on intel platform only, hence the speed boost and smaller footprint

I used a software called Monolingual to get rid of the languages I did not need, and I think it also help to remove the PPC code which this system doesn't need.
