Default Is it necessary to get the EF-S lens?

Hi, I went to Cathay today to enquire about the 300D model. I understand it comes in body alone or body + lens. I have a set of EF lenses at home so I thought of just purchasing the body alone. The salesperson however said the image quality would be compromised if I use the 300D body with my EF lenses and it is more worthwhile to purchase the body+lens set. Does anybody have any advice on this issue? Is it necessary to purchase the EF-S lens?

Also, may I know where can I get the best buy for 300D?

Thank you so much!!

It is definitely worhwhile to buy the 300D+lens set but the part about compromising image quality is simply nonsense

One thing to note is the 1.6x cropping factor due to the sensor which is smaller than negative. This will mean that your wide-angle lens is no longer very wide (multiply by 1.6x to get the "focal length" that represents the field of view).

I m a 300D user myself. The 15-55 lens is a wide angle lens dedicated to dig cam

I chose not to buy this lens is bcos i have the 28-105 usm and i shoot mainly portraits. I use 28mm ( 50mm after the 1.6x) for slight wide angle.

Hi, I think the salesperson is trying to pull a fast one on you. The EF-S lens that comes with the 300D is just any normal lens, only difference is that it is an S mount, i.e. can be only used for the 300D body (by right). It would not affect your image quality if you do not use the EF-S lens. If the salesperson says that it would affect the image quality, then whoever wants to get this camera have to sell away their normal lenses as this 18-55 EF-S is the only one available now!!

In my opinion, it is quite a good lens actually as it is 18-55 and you pay aniother S$100 more for it right? Unless of course you already have a wide lens.

You can try Alan photo or MS Color for price comparisons.

a lot of ppl looking for this lens........ saw someone willing to pay up to $140 for 18-55 EF-S in the buy & sell forum.

there are 2 options here:
1. Buy the kit, then sell 18-55 EF-S in the forum if you dont want to use
2. Use it to take nice pictures (as it is equiv to 28-88mm on normal slr)

A lot of people are quite satisfied with the kit lens.... Im actually keen on getting one as I only bought the 300D body.... ( no kits lens was available when i bought mine...) . ..

KST has posted pics taken from this lens....look at those pics and from there you decide... ...it produces nice photos....

OR as SCUD has suggested......you have two options....

Hi, thanks for all your comments. I do have another question though, does anybody forsee that prices of 300D to drop in the next few months to a year? I'm new in digital photography so I'm not sure about price fluctuations for digital cameras. Hope to hear from you guys/gals... thanks!!

if there is only one thing certain, the price of digital cameras will drop as newer models appear. You can be almost sure it probably wouldn't rise like stocks.

Just buy it second hand. since you can be assured that no 300D on the market is > 4 mths old.

18-55mm Kit lens is a must for 300D!! You will need the wide angle for indoor shot. If you buy other wide angle lens will cost a lot more. Get the kit lens first then save up to get 70-200 oe 28-135 to enhance the zoom.

Default Is really worth for $

I do not own a 300D myself, however did consider getting one.
IMO the kit lens is a steal at that price based on what I read
from various reviews / user feedback.
Just buy the kit you won't regret it.

Yes i very much agree that you should get the lens kit. As it gives you a very affordable wide angle...as you can see the 17-40F4L is at $1200+ and this 18-55 is only at about $100. so well ofcourse quality is one thing. but the ef-s lens quality is very good already for a cheap lens. If not next time when you want to get a wide angle to must spend a premium. Unless you find that that premium is justifyable.

not appropriate to compare 17-40F4L with EF-S 18-55 TECHNICALLY. they are totally 2 dif league all together.
but, i do agree that this lens is essential in dslr as it give a considerably wide angle.
well, you may not want to spend more money on wide angle lenses in future if you decide to have one, so go for it in your 1st purchase.
buy the KIT or else you will regret.
