Thumbs up Canon 70-200 f4L or Sigma 70-200 f2.8 ?

Haiz after reading through a lot of posts on the above lenses, can't really get decided.

I guess many people here have the same question since both are about equally priced

I shoot mostly outdoors, indoors sometimes

I've read the sigma is a bit soft, but outdoors will that matter?

indoors, the sigma might be better than the canon?

so which would you get, and why, thanks!

i'm using the canon f4. weight is so much lighter. price is only slightly higher than the sigma. very sharp pics generated. but then i've never tried shooting with the sigma b4. held it though n it weighs a ton!

Optical quality Canon f/4.0 is better than sigma, but doesnt comes with the tripod collar, Sigma comes with the colar and outside performance is more solid, and it is fast lens

i don't have either, but given a choice i would either take the sigma or get a 200/2.8L prime. F4 is a bit slow at that length. YMMV.

which is why the potential buyer has 2 weigh the odds himself. does he need sharpness & lightweight or does he need the extra stop & not mind the heaviness?

I m thinking of this too. As I have the 300D I will go for the canon lens. Yes it is f4 compare to sigma's 2.8...the canon is the L lens.

THis is my preference.

actually its not about whether its a L lens. for all we noe the sigma may not suffer much optical loss as compared 2 the canon. wat matters most is whether how u plan 2 use the lens. if u're shooting most or all the time in well-lit conditions, the f4 is no prob at all. in fact its not dat bad even under poor lighting. as for the sigma, only those who've used it will noe its pros n cons.

I do more outdoors esp portraiture so hence this is what I m looking for. Gotta compromise of the aperture. 2.8L is too expensive

Given the fact the Canon 70-400mm F4 is lightweight, do you think there is a problem mounting it on the tripod through the camara body e.g. Canon 10D since it does not come with tripod collar.

Sigma 70-200 f2.8 is softer image at f2.8 but not at f4, have to compare apple to apple.

But is the softness very critical, I think it is up to individual.

Sometimes, when using film and don't have time to change to higher rating film, the 1 stop difference really helps.

But beware of the break neck weight, it may be the casue that you miss a great shot down the road as you are tired from all these weight.

Just my 1 cents worth of thought.
