Default Canon PIXMA Pro9500 Mark II or Epson Stylus Photo R1900?

Hello all,

I am looking to buy a professional photo printer to print my own high quality prints up to 14 x 17". Cathay Photo website listed these two professional printers.

- Canon PIXMA Pro9500 Mark II
- Epson Stylus Photo R1900

Does anyone has any experience or recommendation to the best quality printer in the market right now?

Thanks in advance.

Hmm i think the hp is over shawdowered by the new canon 9500 mkii. But i believe hp prints r more lasting but the inks are too ex. If i hv the cash, i will get theEpson 2xxx or 3xxx series. But given at printers less than $1.5 k and long term cost the new canon 9500ii is good. R1900 is a quite old model with lower reso but no doubt good colours

The Epson is overhauled in terms of technology. In general however it is very difficult to rely on user experiences as for both models I see people rating it 5 out of 5 but at the same time 0 out of 5.

Canon is apparently having service difficulties in a number of countries once the printer itself starts showing difficulties and there are some software issues (driver conflicts) known depending on the application you are using to print.

I'm currently consider this printer myself and for now it is a matter of timing before getting it. One of the reasons, pretty much unbeatable in the black and white range.

I have been speaking to some shops including Cathay and saw their prints. I have taken two prints from Cathay. One colour printed on Canon semi gloss paper the other b/w printed on Museo sliver rag.

I must say I am not convinced and impressed with the quality. All the write up on the internet seems to say highly of the printer. For me it's the final result that matters.

For the colour photo, its a shot of the Merlion at Marina Bay at night. The merlion white is a complete wash out. The night light on the esplanade theatre building and the hotel look dull without any tonal range. I asked Cathay if they have any portrait photo with wider colour range that I can see but he said they do not have any due to copyright issue. I do sincerely hope that image is taken using low quality camera or shot with high iso.

I have left the print sandwiched between the Canon printer brochure I was given by Cathay and now I can see a few white smudges on the night sky of the photo. Did the ink from the print came off from rubbing between the pages of the brochure? A lab printed print will not have this outcome.

For the b/w print, its a shot of a large machine in a factory. There is some fine detail in the print but I find there is too much silver tone and the print doesn't too very realistic.

Finally having seen the prints and feeling dissatisfied with the quality I think I might see go ahead to buy the printer as I will need at least a high quality printer for my home office use. I would like to make some prints from home for portraits and landscape and if the quality meet my expectation than I can sell them. Otherwise I will have no choice but end up going back to professional lab to do the prints for my clients.

P.S. The Comex I.T. show is coming up at Suntec from 10 Sep and I hope this printer will be on sales there.

Best regards,
Stan Ngo
