i have used pentax for close to 3 years, i don't understand why our dear singaporeans refuse to even consider it, most times i recommend it to people, the response is "huh, never heard of it", and then it is dismissed without a second thought.. which is sad.

if that was the case, then many brands would have died long ago, but people gave it a try, and it was good, the response was good, the brand improved..

i have used, k100d, k20d, tried a lot of other models before.. the k100d era was really value for money already, now they are giving much more features for your buck..

shake reduction, excellent lenses from the brand itself that are considerably cheaper (prime-wise at the very least) , feature-laden, weather sealing even on entry level.. these are things that other brands cannot offer. of course pentax has its cons. all the pentaxians here in the pentax section would gladly tell you that the brand is not perfect - something that i'm proud to say, we are pragmatic and honest.

why don't you drop by the pentax section and check out, i think the price of k7 is mentioned and relatively rigid because of the good effort of the current distributor (emjay).. i'm not saying that pentax is the best brand, it may never be the best brand, but what i'm saying is that it should be given a go, because it is a lot of camera, for the price. that i dare say.

I've always thought Pentax is a well known photography brand. I remember during my dad's stint in SLR long time ago, brands like Pentax and Minolta are pretty popular.

I like K7, very impressive camera body, the weather seals are

The companies that advertise the most for DSLR are Canon, Nikon and probably Sony... no wonder people don't know about the other ones.

I guess it's a chicken and egg thing when it comes to brand popularity.
The fact that Nikon and Canon are popular brands, means it's more likely that someone amongst your friends or relatives owns a C/N system. That gives the brand a certain level of exposure.

A lot of people have been recommending CSers to buy the same brand as their friends/relatives, to share lenses and accessories.

This then perpetuates the popularity of the C/N brands.

    My personal story is:
My dad shot with an old Nikon FM2 for many many years. It never gave him any problems, so he stuck to Nikon when he bought his D40. His old lenses could still be used, albeit only in M mode.
I then got the D80 kit and a number of accessories (over time), and he has upgraded to D90. So now we have a Nikon 'arsenal' that we can fully share. It just made more sense to stick to Nikon.

*plus of course I really like the camera la

Well, I think your photos themselves are already the best 'spokesman' of the brand's capabilities to take great pictures.

Photos posted in the Pentax subforum are just as impressive. I guess marketing plays a big role in affecting the consumers' mentality
towards certain brands. I can't say I'm not guilty as well

It is really that good. K-7 is expensive no doubt, but other Pentax entry level models are cheaper and better feature-wise compared to the same price range offerings by other brands.

Take a look at nightmare's gallery and see how Pentax is capable of.

I'm not a Pentax user btw.

I would have gone the Pentax way if my dad did not give me the D40x. My dad has tons of Nikon mount stuff that make it logical to continue that route. My dad did have a pentax film SLR back in the day and several lenses. He sold it all when he got the F4.

Thing is, N, C and S spend a lot in their marketing. And N and C had a lot of legacy stuff going around, a lot more than the other brands. S being quite new in the DSLR market is trying to catch up, after they bought K-M. So I guess it is natural that N and C has a lot more users than other brands. We also know that many folks are fiercely loyal and zealous over their chosen system. That is why we get all these brand war and newbie psycho-ing thingy going on.

In my view there is no best or clear winner system out there. Since each has their own strengths and weaknesses. So people should match their needs according the system's SWOT. If I am to start new with no access to any legacy lenses, I would have gone Pentax as well. But that is just me.

I think most people will be in dilemma on getting their 1st DSLR. worry about getting the wrong brand and if you want a switch, it will cost a bomb.
I was at your stage too.

Now after i got my 1st DSLR, i'm happily shooting and learning more technique. rather than thinking of which brand is better or which brand lens is more expensive.

just get what you like, that is the most important.

And is our eyes to see better pictures, and the man to take better photos. not the brand.
There are award winning photo taken by PnS only.

Well, I started out using my dad's Nikon and Canon SLR system, followed by a D70 in the digital age. My friends and family owned one brand or the other as well. Then one fine day, I decided to get my own setup. Next thing I knew, I had a Pentax K10D in my hands along with an old M50/1.7 lens.

Why a Pentax? Truth be told, I didn't know why at that time. (I think it had to do with the community and the cult status) After lots of shooting, I fell in love with the old manual primes. Sure, the new DA and FA primes are drool-worthy, but cheap old (quality) lenses are good enough for me. I might not get every shot right, but the ones that do put a grin on my face.

And the best thing is the community. They are an honest bunch who don't defend the brand blindly, and will happily list the flaws if asked. Once you learn to work around the faults, all is well. Another plus is the fact that Pentax listens to its customers and implement their suggestions to the best of their ability in the next model. This is why Pentax releases one new model every year or two instead of every few months.
    Brand loyalty? Pffttt...| Got Flickr?
I shoot JPEG (got a problem with that?)

Sony style haha .. yes . sony has a channel on SCV.

    night86mare ... i love pentax too . i almost got a 2nd body this year .. was aiming for the k7 but ...

the distro was a total disappointment. i had a VERY VERY unpleasant experienced there along with my gf . wont say who and which .

the very first dslr i ever wanted to own was an ist dl . hah. but i got my fuji s1pro and then my d50 and sticked to nikon.

    i played with a canon 350d . had friends using 30d and now 50d. i've friends using sony alpha 350 .

pentax is an amazing camera. so is nikon. so is canon. so is sony. so is olympus. if i was a billionaire, i'd buy all the systems and make the best out of it all . TS , since you've set your heart on the 2 big names , have you tested it out yet and see where your heart lies ?

    1. Thinking to get Nikon latest model D3000, although body should be quite cheap, but Nikkor lens generally more expensive than Canon's one. (comparing Canon's 50mm f1.8 with Nikkor 35mm f1.8) Overall Nikkor lens will be more expensive than Canon's.

    2. Canon produces warmer pictures, as compared to Nikon, more natural color tone.

    3. Canon having buy back program now, even Canon 500D kit is cheaper than Nikon D5000. For long term, Canon's lens also cheaper and more variety.

    Hard to decide man.....need help!

I am Canon BIG FAN, but been reading KenRockWell's reviews this few days....kind of influenced by him, started to fall in love with Nikon...haha...

Thanks for your advise....to guide me out at this JUNCTION...haha
I am not sure if Canon cameras produce warmer pictures as compared to Nikon but I am quite certain that you can adjust them to match your preference.

Price wise, I would say that lenses with same focal length and max aperture need not always imply equal image quality. You have got make comparisons on a case-by-case basis.

In terms of usability, I find Nikon's customizable auto ISO very useful. You can set both the max ISO to use and the minimum shutter speed before auto ISO will kick in. When shooting objects that move fast, you could set minimum shutter speed at 1/500 and you are likely not to get blurred pictures. When shooting still objects, you may change this setting to 1/15. Canons don't have this feature.

In terms of ergonomics and user interface, it's really a matter of personal preference. It's your choice. I prefer Nikon when I tested them. You may like Canon better. It doesn't matter as long as you enjoy using it.

In terms of lens choice, you could visit www.slrgear.com. There are feedback from users as well as technical reviews.

I am a Nikon user. You may visit my webpage http://photobugg.multiply.com if you wish to.

i am quite surprised that this thread is getting popular as all the senior members also posting their comments here...really appreciate that..

At first, i only believe in Canon or Nikon. As in, for this kind of big investment, i rather go for well known brand with good reputation than taking risk to go for those that less popular or less user. At least, i believe that follow the majority i wouldn't go wrong...

By after reading so many posts, i think i should see more and try more on different brand, at least not only Canon and Nikon, but also give a try on Pentax, Sony, or Olympus....

The most important thing is to get a camera that we like it most, at least, this can motivate us to pick it up everyday and play with it, use it, and continue improve photographic skill together with it...

Any idea where is the good place for me to try more cameras, with constructive comments but not hard selling? scared of hard selling promoter....

I am just looking for entry level DLSR......but i believe this will also be my door step...into this hobby...that can last for my entire life.....

you can go to ms color at AMK.. i get all my stuff from there.

if it isn't too crowded the staff will usually let you try different lenses and give you advice.
go look for the lady boss florence. she's usually the friendliest and the discount she can give you is the biggest.

For me, why I chose Canon is not for any other thing, but for the service support. How many brands can loan you lenses while yours is in service, how many service center can service your equipment in 2hrs when you tell them that you are in a hurry? On top of that there are equipment that has warranty expired and still get free service.

When I buy a brand, that brand has to support me as a user regardless if I am a pro or not. (I am not a pro to begin with and they already provide such service.)

Not mentioning free parking and free tea and coffee while waiting for your turn to be service.

i think its funny... how everyone was arguing over canon and nikon..
then nightmare comes along expressing the lesser known brands and suddenly everyone is like "yeah man i've used a (insert pentax/olympus/yashica/etc) plenty of times, i loved it so much, jeez"

    cracks me up

hmmm..i heard Canon focusing speed is much faster than nikon
That was true...a couple of years back when Nikon's lens line were mostly using the old screwdriver-AF focus.

Currently, they are about the same with both brands being about the same speed although Nikon's top-of-the-line D3 AF is much more intelligent and accurate in low-light compared to Canon's 1D mk3
