Default James Nachtwey injured in Iraq

Speedy recovery to James and Weisskopf...

2 American Journalists Wounded in Iraq
    By DAVID CARR

Two journalists covering the Iraq conflict for Time magazine were wounded Wednesday night in Baghdad, when a grenade was thrown into the Humvee they were riding in while accompanying United States military personnel, representatives of the magazine said Thursday.

James Nachtwey, a contract photographer for Time who has won numerous awards for his war photography, and Michael Weisskopf, a senior correspondent for the magazine, were in stable condition Thursday evening and awaiting transfer to a military hospital in Germany, according to executives at the magazine. Two soldiers were also wounded in the attack.

According to the Paris-based World Association of Newspapers, at least 16 journalists have been killed in Iraq this year.

The wounded men were riding in an open Humvee at 9:30 p.m. in Baghdad when a grenade landed among them. Mr. Weisskopf picked up the grenade and threw it part way out of the vehicle, losing his right hand but limiting the injury to the others, according to an e-mail message sent to his former colleagues by Valerie Strauss, a reporter at The Post.

Jim Kelly, the managing editor of Time, said that Mr. Weisskopf and Mr. Nachtwey had spent a significant amount of time in Iraq this year. "They are as good and as brave as the any journalists I have ever worked with," he said.

Mr. Weisskopf covers national politics for Time, and was a finalist for the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for national reporting.
