Thanks everyone for the comments and opinions!

    I still haven't buy the CPL yet..haha..
I am planning to buy this week liao..

is it silly to think I can buy a B+W 77mm MRC CPL with a step-up ring to convert to 72mm, just so that I can avoid vignetting at wide angle with my 15-85 lens?

77mm to 72mm for 15mm focal length will probably not reduce vignetting, but might even increase it.

If it is 77mm to 67mm, it will work better.

I suggest you just get a 72mm CPL with has a slim rim. B+W has one, and Kenko has the Pro1D wide band CPL which is slim rim too.
