Nice shots! Nothing to be embarassed about. You'll need to get a flash extender soon. The only thing missing in your shots would be the 'twinkle' in the birds' eyes. That could be achieved by a flash reflecting off the birds' eyes to make them come 'alive'.

Then again, I'm no bird shooter either. Perhaps Erwin can give you some tips.

The bright green background for your third shot reminds me of your insect shots. Anyway great sharpness. What is your setup?

Very nice and sharp images of the birds.

Would you share with us the equipment setup and exposure details?

Thanks

You are more than qualified, perfect exposure, background and sharp. Great shots

I like the first shot best. Perhaps the second shot should place the bird (Magpie Robin) to the right instead of the left to give space to where it is looking.

Cheers

Thanks guys.

Im using 100-400 IS + 1.4X for all the shots. Apparently, all were using MF.. anyway, im used to it.

Settings: ISO400, f8-f11, 1/90-1/125s. Though I was using a monopod, I guess IS really helps.

finally the pics have been loaded into the cache so i can see them (usually i can't see direct-linked geocities images)

very nice pics particularly the spotten dove and the magpie robin. wow using monopod at 1/90-1/125 I guess IS does work.

the eyes are all ok, doesn't really need a boost in terms of a flash catchlight. the image would be further improved with nicer sunlight (to give more 'sparkle' esp to the robins, though the light on the Dove is perfect), but as can be seen from your photos, its been a very very wet december

as indicated, the pose of the magpie robins can be improved. if there are no annoying people walking around that area of BG, usually the robins will 'pose' for you and allow you to reposition your camera

wow great pics! Good use of DOF and colours. Your skills in macro does help in bird photograph, doesn't it? Where did you go to take these pics?

Yah, I guess the MF accuracy/speed, composition and exposure are quite standard.
I took it at SBG.
