    Hi Skyguy,

I was in you position too. I went to shops to enquires price and Nikon Showroom. I pop the same question too.
Everyone I met recommend me D90.
Bought D90 body with Sigma 18-200mm OS from Lord's Camera at Lucky Plaza.
You can look for Raymond, he is friendly and helpful.
    No regret till now.

have a feel of both cams and see which you prefer... although the weight difference for the body is less than 100 grams. having said that i do believe d90 is the better choice.

wow... thanks for the quick reply... i heard so much about D5000 where people keep saying its good... such tat i seem to have heard lesser about D90... comparing the spec, is it really just short of AF motor in the body and veri lcd screen?

the D90 is the one WITH the AF motor in the body. Hence you have AF capability with many more lenses.
the D5000 is the one with the vari-angle LCD screen.

    comparing LCD screens:
    D5000: 2.7" 200+K dots
    D90: 3.0" 900+K dots
MUCH higher resolution screen on the D90.

    - Better build quality
    - Bigger and brighter viewfinder
    - Nikon Advanced Wireless Lighting capability
    etc etc etc
    many things to compare!

Try them both in your hands to see which one would fit well. Though of course taking note of the features, don't allow yourself to be bugged by little things like grip, weight, handle, access to menus, etc. after all, you'll be holding it much of the time.

    Good luck.

If the price difference is negligible for you, D90 is better so you don't have to worry about motorised/non-motorised lenses. Better to do a feature comparison and ultimately try both models out so you can make a decision based on whichever feels comfortable for you. Good luck!

if u are going for value for $, i suggest D5000.

if u are going for built, lens compatibility and more features (which u may not use), then D90.

D 90 hands down the absence of a built in motor will affect you in the long run I also had the same experience . I used to own a d40 now I changed to the d200 partly bcos of the motor and the battery grip

    Advantages of D5000 over D90:

    - Smaller built (good for small hands)
    - Vari angle lcd monitor (good for low awkward position shots)
    - Cheaper by the few hundred bucks with standard kit lenses
    - Rangefinder mode for MF

I think D90 and D5000 are in two different categories?

So it is a choice of which category you want to start with. When I was looking for an entry level DSLR D40, a friend asked me to look at D5000. I bought D40 instead and thought that my next upgrade would be a D90.

    With D3000 introduced, maybe a D3000 is preferred over a D5000?

D90.....there's a reason for the difference in price, not just AF motor.

    i agree.

threadstarter asked something in the LONG RUN.

maybe in the long run TS would use CLS, hence d90 has commander mode.
maybe in the long run TS would use other older lenses so D90 ios a good choice.

ultimately, head down and test out yourselfd

note that they are in different leagues

one is slightly above entry level and one is midrange

    but i'd recommend D90

    and oh,

IMO, choosing D5000 over D90 is giving up A LOT more than the price difference...not worth it at all. Unless you're very sure you'll never venture beyond casual snaps otherwise the choice should be easy.

Lets dont even say abt features like CLS, built quality, viewfinder, top LCD(crucial to me..)etc

Just go to shop(I recommend J3.16,v noob friendly & honest), shoot same scene and compare the preview. The screen resolution difference will be so obvious, its easy to choose.
*esp when us noobs shooting, being abt to have nice preview adds much to e enjoyment..hee.

    D90: 3.0" 900+K dots

I notice a lot of comments about the 2 cameras being in a different CLASS or LEAGUE, but that doesn't really answer the TS' question about the difference between the 2 cameras. How does that clarify anything?

    A: the D90 is a league above the D5000
B: so? What does that mean?
    A: erm......

What use is knowing a BMW 3 series is of a higher class than a Toyota Altis (no offence to the Toyota Altis owners.... ) when a prospective buyer is just interested in a safe and reliable car to get from Point A to B?

hi, what i meant is that they are two different leagues of camera, like D300 and D700

there are some things in the D90 that are not in the D5000,

so i am merely telling TS not to look at the cameras in terms of the model,

but of the same range such as D40 and D60, D80 and D90.

for example, the D5000 doesnt have the built in AF motor while the D90 has it.

    hope this clears things up

I went for the D90 - for the built-in AF motor (which allows me to AF on the lovely 50mm f/1.4), high res screen for better on-the-spot reviews, and top LCD for convenience.
