18-55/18-200 will do. 18-200 may be the one you want for an all-in-one lens. If you're looking for a cheap one, do consider the Sigma version of this.

Use either flash(the 270ex) or fast small primes such the the 35mm f2 or the 50mm 1.8 when indoors with low light. Unless you have a tripod and a non-moving subject, that is.

If u're just carrying a single lens and don't wish to undergo the hassles of changing lenses, the 18-200/250/270 series will be great.

my reccomendation will be 18-50 f2.8. definitely a large variety of the shots can be taken with 18-200 is a good good choice. but for i will go for fast lens if i can only bring one cos in my experience normally some of the really nice photos are taken indoor like cathedral or some kinda dark alley probably and its not alway u can have a bright sunny weather, tripod or steady hands. especially when evening and night falls u will appreciate hving 1 or 2 stop advantage to avoid noise or handshake. i'm using a a200 which is probably only good at iso400 and slightly acceptable at iso800. unless u hv a pro camera then it will be least of ur concern. so for 1000D i'm not sure how is the noise like but this is something worth considering.

Any lens is good. It really depends on:
    What you shoot
    What you have
    What you can afford.

That's the normal price, similarly for Nikon's 18-200 VR.

throw in a uwa lens as well... unless you travel very often to the same places you don't want to miss out those uwa-type shots.

These are the 'normal' prices of lenses... if you're stuck with a damn tight budget, might as well keep your kit and until you see the need of a new lens than get lor (do you need one now?). Cuz really the choices are only so much for tight budget and you can easily scan through the Canon Price List Guide.

Not to mention Speedlite, it's $450 for the 430EXII. I reckon you'll stick with your built in right....

There are also 3rd-party offerings from Sigma and Tamron and they're both equally as gd too.
