Beside having backup, also try to keep at least 1 set of your backup copy at different location. Maybe your relative place or even your best friends place.
Cos in a rare event of cases like fire, even you got 10 backups copies, it will all been burn into ashes.

There's a limit as to how much you can upload to Flickr. It's also a pain to upload/retrive pictures if you have a slow internet connection.

It's easier to backup to an external HDD.

Keep in mind that the more you use the hard disk after the photos were gone, the lower the chance you have to recover the files. so for the moment, please stop plugging the hard disk into your computer lest you minimize the chances of recovering your data.

As for software, try Recover my Files by Getdata Inc. www.getdata.com.

I come from a computer forensics firm and this software is the de facto standard which we use to recover files.
If that doesn't work, you will have to send the hard disk to professional hard disk recovery companies like adrc or kroll ontrack where they have a clean room environment and will attempt to recover your data using specialized tools.

    Cheers,
    Bregan

Not sure why there are people who always blame virus at the first sign of IT disasters. Viruses probably account for only a minority of such diasters worldwide.

ya..Bregan is right. no hard disc can completely spoil unless u smash it with huge hammer, then it works haha. Otherwise data can always be traced back. FBI,CIA,KGB,etc knows how to deal with hardcore criminals where they hide info in their HDD then tried to use powerful magnet to destroy it yet fail & recovered by FBI computer scientists haha.

I only use 1 level of backup as well, an external 1TB hdd. Thinking of getting a BlueRay writer to backup all those raws. Does anyone use BD for backup? Can they be multisessioned?

ok ... this may be a little spin off from the topic ....

anyone got advice for recovery from corrupted DVD rom .... I have done a few backups on DVD and now beginning to realise that I have problems reading some of them ... they would read half way ... and then hang ...

cannot copy to another disc or anything like that ...

Try clean your DVD lens with a proper lens cleaning kit; also try reading on another computer.

could be a chance that the dvd has 'bad-sectored'.. sorry, not too sure the proper technical terms ..
i've personally tried a program called 'Dead Disk Doctor' which will 'skip' the reading of the problem area and you should be able to salvage most of the data ..
