Default On vacation, which is your priority shoot?

I ask this question cos I notice from my travel experiences, time is a very important factor, especially when you join a packaged tour.

When you're on a vacation, what do you shoot first? Scenary, your spouse/partner/friends/children, or yourself by passing the camera to them? I' referring more to the case when time is very limited and you can only do a quick 1 or at most 2 shots within seconds. Think of it that the coach is leaving soon!!!

Incidentally, does anyone have a trying time describing to friends or partners how to shoot with youself inside the picture? Be it composition or focusing.

For me, it is my family and myself first, and then the scenary. I assume you are referring to a conducted tour where you are always in a hurry. Since conducted tours will bring you to popular tourist places, you can usually find good pictures of them in the internet. So, better to capture evidences of your presence....

As for trying to get someone to take a picture that you want, well, I think 9 times out of 10, you are not getting what you want. I always try to take at least two shots. One with you in it, and the other just the scene. If you can't have a good shot on myself, at least you have a good shot taken by yourself.

i put a tripod and took photos of myself and travelling partners together...

problem is usually w group tour, everybody is taking photos at the same time, making the scenery very cluttered w people posing all over the places ...

in descending order of preference:

i) scenery

ii) scenery with my friend/s in the picture

no doubt there are pictures on the net, but there is a thrill when the pictures are created by yourself.

and the next in priority lets me continue with practising composition whilst getting in some pictures with my friends in it.

reason i don't take picutures of my friends is that they'll all be shooting each other (and me) madly. no need for me to take any, i'll just take from them later on. meanwhile, i'll practise practise practise.

yeah, i second that.

i try to if the person takes an interest in learning. with those who snap for the sake of snapping, i'll just precompose the pix and tell them to push the trigger.

First I would take photos of my travel partners (family, friends), a few quick shots and let them know I am done. Then I will spend the next few precious moment to take the scenery and street scene, while I can enjoy on my own. (my travel partners always end up in shopping centres which I have no interests). Then the last one, if still got time, set the tripod and take photos of myself.

LOLOL! Astin, you're funny!
I think people shots are important, you and the people around you. I would like to remember where I went, who I saw, what I did etc. People shots speak of cultures, lifestyles, traditions etc etc. These are precious to me.

If I go overseas with my gf or spouse, scenery and her is priority (scenery photo wif my gf in it). If i have enough, then it's scenery

Thanks all for the sharing... Yes... conducted tours are such a rush. Setting up a tripod is quite impossible sometimes. Think of it as 1 more minute and you have to be back in the bus. I've experienced nice scenaries, but often a compromise has to be made between getting nice shots of scenaries and those with either your partners or youself inside. It's difficult really. On the one hand, you want to take just the view and admire your own work. Yet on the other hand, you have travelled so far and it doesn't do justice to not include yourself or your friends inside.

At other times, i know there's a better view to capture about 10 minutes walk up, but then due to time contraints, I got to give up the opportunity! Nothing can be more disappointing than that.

When travelling with friends who are not into photography, it can even be a trying time to tell them how to compose a shot.
