Earthquuake just reported at Bukittinggi... 6.9
Kristupa and the Indonesian team are checking and getting status reports on Padang and Bukittinggi area
I asked him to check if our hotels are still standing or not kekekeke
It is quite near there...along the river...
Keep the faith! Keep the faith!
Just got off the phone with organizers
THey say that only minor cracks in the tallest buildings and that shorter buildings were intact due to earthquake absorbing technology applied to building constructions for many years already given the long history of tremors in the region
7 people have been hurt .... reported minor injuries but all discharged.
Will keep all informed further of any news
Who wants to stay on ground or low floor of hotel ?
Word from Kristupa............
"An earthquake occured in Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra on August 16, 2009, 14:28 local time.
Data from USGS (United States Geological Survey) stated that the magnitude is 6.7, which is big, and epicenter is 44.8 km, which is relatively shallow.
Epicenter is 110 km WSW (west-southwest) Padang, the capital of West Sumatra Province
The main earthquake is followed by secondary earthquake occurences, which are smaller.
I have been monitoring the situation in West Sumatra since the earthquake occured until this moment
No major victim and no major damage is reported in mainland Padang. Reports also say that there was no tsunami occured.
Communication to islands in Mentawai is missing, and no news yet. But we are not going to go to Mentawai
News reports say that there are 10 people lightly injured in panic. Damage reports come from few tall buildings in Padang which had minor cracks on their walls
The earthquake did not cause any major damage nor victim.
As a former geologist I may say that Padang is safe to visit.
The power lines are safe and still run electricity.
Communications and mobile phones are normal.
I would like to suggest us to continue CB 6 as planned
There is a report from national authority of volcanology, that there is an increased activity of Talang Volcano nearby.
The report also say that the Talang status is still in safe stage and people is still allowed to climb up to the summit.
Volcanological history of Talang Volcano states that this volcano has calm type of eruption, which is not eruptive and explosive
Indonesia is located in The Ring of Fire, which means there is a chain of volcanoes which lies along the west part of Sumatra, through southern part of Java and branches out to Sulawesi, Halmahera Islands and Papua.
It is common to live side-by-side with volcano in Indonesia
People who attended CB 1 should be aware that Jogja is only 30 km away from Merapi Volcano, which is very beautiful, photogenic and brings in fertility to surroundings area
We are only about 6 weeks to CB 6
There is no important reason to worry about earthquake and volcanic activity
I will keep you updated first hand and from the personal view of a former geologist
Hope this e-mail will make you get clearer information about Padang, West Sumatra and the recent earthquake occurence"
wah... if got volcano smoke to take... then very lucky for the photographers but might not be for the residents
Fine print - Anything I posted is strictly my own point of view :)
