Flash question

I am using the C5050 internal flash, sometimes I find the flash too harsh. Is there anyway i am soften or diffuse the flash, making it look softer, more evenly spread?

put a tissue or gauze like material over the flash... or reduce the flash ev while maintaining over all exposure by increasing exposure compensation by the same number of ev as reduced on the flash

also shoot at higher iso to increase the ambient light input sensivity of the camera resulting in less need to rely on the flash for correct exposure.
