Question on FED 2 / I-61 L/D

Question 1: I remember in my FED 3, the shutter speed dial rotate CW up to 1/30 (past 1/500 and B), CCW up to 1 sec. Now that I have a FED 2 (version: that one that also looks like a FED 3 but minus the slow speeds below 1/30), I notice that the shutter speed dial just rotate freely on either direction. Is it really like this?

Question 2: Do all Industar-61 L/Ds only have 6-bladed diaphragms? I always thought this is an "upgrade", but the original I-61 have 10-bladed diaphragms.

1. The speed dial is design to stop at 1/30, to access to 1sec, you have to turn opposite direction. So the 1/30 is kind of a "stopper" and you can actually feel it. However, without knowing this (not reading the manual), someone can use bull-strength to force pass it thought it's tight/stuck and screw the resistant and may cause the dial to turn freely afterthat.

2. The L/D version is 6-bladed. Is your the Original non L/D version? I-61L/D is the standard len when they introduce FED-3 and later. I think there are oriniginal non L/D version too for the earlier FED. But ofcos someone can use a L/D one on earlier FED too.

So you're saying it should also stop somewhere also for the FED 2? From what I can deduce, the stopper is there more so to prevent you from over-winding the clock-like mechanism that delays the 2nd curtain from snapping close when you go to speeds from 1/15 to 1 sec, and the FED 2 doesn't have those speeds.

Hmm. Think I better check the fzorki site.

I thought L/Ds only come standard with FED 5? Anyway, both my FED 2/3 use the old I-61, the L/D only came as a bonus from the ebay merchant as he gave me a version of the FED 2 different from the picture he was showing in the auction.

If you open the FED, you can see that the shutter tension is design base on the old contax/leica concept which uses a spring tension and a disc with grove that let you rest the dial when pull up and dn to lock it into the speed setting. Turn it anyhow mean will stress the spring and if not too much the spring is tighter or losser but the shutter can still be accurate. Over doing it for awhile will screw it up. These are really old design that can be as old as 70 yrs ago.

While your shutter is still ok. Better do it proper way and it will serve you many years. My FED is very reliable and how I noe it can be screwed? Cos I did that to my KIEV-4M. It work ok, even turning without cocking so the more it work fine the more I want to do otherwise then it screwed. Haha.

For FED, I do it religiously after I took the KIEV apart and see how it actually work. I can be quite sure that the FED will work fine and stay with me for the next 20yrs.

L/D I dunno maybe on the FED4 or like u said 5? have been a while I was readiing it so might be wrong.

Morganoh, the answer is yes. But as with all screw mount, you should be careful to align the threads correctly so that you do not screw-up the screw thread (pun intended).

From experience, it is easier if you first turn the focus on the lens to it's minimum distance, that is, fully extend the lens outwards away from the from the mount so that when you mount it, the lens cam doesn't immediately start to apply pressure on the range finder coupler on the body, the little wheel at about 12 o'clock inside the camera mount. This reduction in resistance from the RF coupler may help you align the lens more squarely on the mount when mounting the lens.
