Default how to take macro shots with z1

hi all
just got myself a minolta Z1
not very good with the macro function.
was wondering whether i need to get a macro lens to take real close up pics.
e.g.

when taking macro shots, do i have to always point the camera real close to subject?
pls advise this photography newbie
