Why are you worried about the camera being discontinued? If you are waiting for the price to fall then, waiting will always get you a better price, but then you will never get down to buying a camera, because you will always be waiting. If you are waiting for a better camera, why not get the D5000 or D90 with cmos sensor?

D2 series -Discontinued.. D100 - Discontinued.. D200 - Discontinued.. D50 - Discontinued.. D70/s - Discontinued.. D40/X - Discontinued.. Life still goes on... There's always a replacement model out there at a similar price bracket and giving better quality images than before... |

Which would you choose? I'd definitely go for the D2x even if its already been replaced.

I think he is trying to ask if he should wait for the new model.
Yes is the answer. If you know it is going to be out soon.

Why not just get something older instead? Newer is usually better depending on which range you get. But lets be realistic, the old isn't exactly bad too. You can get a 2nd hand D200 for under 1k. A camera that was launched at a price of about 2k? It still satisfy's your every need. Not to mention the body is really well built compared to the lower ranges. Unless you plan on taking video then ya, it can't do. Personally for me, all i use in a camera is Manual, Aperature Piority, Iso control, Sharpness & Shutter release whether its in single, timer, contineous, etc. Depends on your needs... Mine has like 3fps? But i don't even use it lol...

If you don't need to shoot now, by all means, wait.
If you'd like to shoot with the D60, just get it. Not sure if the D5k is supposed to be the replacement model for D60. |

I was at sls 2 weeks ago and some stores already not selling D60.. If its what u want, then go get it. I suspect the D5000 is a replacement for the D60, even if nikon doesnt say so..

Several ways to look at it:
(1) get the latest gear when it comes out = paying early adopter price (2) buy gear when it is nearing EOL (end of life) or after replacement has been announced = affordable price and you know what you're giving up compared to new model (if you choose to buy new model you are case (1)) (3) never buy at earliest but also never when near EOL = middle-of-the-road solution, lower price (not absolute bottom), still shiok factor is there. Case (1) you pay premium. Case (2) you go for bargain. This to me is the main motivation, esp when you know exactly what you're giving up. Case (3) is a balance approach. If you check Thom Hogan's page you'll know that D60 has been out-of-stock in many places for a while, Nikon's way of avoiding stucked inventory when new model is released - stop production early to gear for new model. For all intent and purposes the D60 replacement is here, it is the D5000. The new model to be announce will likely take over from D40. So check out the features and performance of D5000 vs D60. If you decide that D60 is sufficient for you, grab it while you can, at about 20-25% lower price than D5000. Otherwise buy D5000 (or wait for D3000(?) and see if you can do with a lower spec body). |

I know you will, cos I have the D60 too (along with the D300) and guess what, the D60 gets roughly the same shutter count as my D300. How about they ran out of 2 digit number? |

Ok... What I meant was Nikon created the D5000 to replace the D60.
Since TS asked what happens if D60 is discontinued. Was meant more as a retoretical question. There's always new models coming out.. Life goes on.

Hehe exactly... But you may feel some pain... Some models just can't be emulated!
Say D200, D40. Just can't get tired of it!

Dun think so. D5k seems a level up since it has D-Movie. Maybe the 'rumoured' D3k will replace the D60.
