Exclamation Can't auto focus

Hi Guys,

have anyone encounter before that their lens can't auto focus at all.
My 18-200 VR lens can't auto focus. Can't even hear the motor inside the lens working at all

Thinking of sending the lens to the NSC but not sure how much it will cost?

Need some advise. Thanks

Remount the lens and try.

If not, can other lens focus on the same body? If yes, send lens to NSC.

I had a Sigma 50-150 that died on the first day ... ended up returning the lens for a refund. Same symptom, AF just stop working ... no sound at all.

You might want to do a 1st level check before sending to NSC:

1) Was the lens able to AF on the lens before this?
2) Is the AF/MF switch on the body, and the lens set to AF & A/MF?
3) You can do a simple elimination test, mount another AFS lens to the body, does it AF? Likewise, mount your 18-200 onto another body, does it AF?

You kept the lens in a dry cabinet with RH set to lower than 45%? The AF-S motor might have got stuck. Still under warranty? if not it's going to cost you $200-$300. You can try leaving the lens in room humidity for a couple of hours then try mounting the lens on the body again and half press to try to get the AF to work again. Just half-press, release, half-press, release.... a couple of times to see if it's able to kick start the motor. Play/Wiggle the focusing ring to see if it might help.

Do you hear the VR?

If your lens is under warranty, just bring it to service centre, it will be free. Back to 6 months ago, my 18-200mm inside my bag was hit by someone from the side n the lens won't focus anymore. Took it for the warranty, changed the motor, free and works prefectly since then. Though they will help me to remove all the dust inside the lens, but...... they are still there.

if you have done this (as you have stated in the thread), then it is definitely an issue with the specific lens, likely the lens AF-S motor or the contacts.

the usual would have been the AF/MF switch on the lens, or the C,S,M switch on the side of the mount.

Have try this but don't work, other lens on the same body works, that lens on another body don't work

Yes try all different combination but same the same effect.

Does at means it have to be off to the NSC?

Do the little exercise I mentioned in my previous reply. If still no avail, then it's off to NSC. Be prepared to pay about $250 for a replacement SWM if the lens is out of warranty.
