as usual, not until you state your shooting style and preferences, you'll get a general response at best.
I do mostly paeds portraits, so 85/1.4 is what i use mostly... for its lowly ability, sharpness and quick focus. |

I recommend 70-200. It can also be a good portrait lens too. The only downside is that it is heavy

If you do portrait more often and in shorter working distance ... go for the 85 f1.4.
If you do events such as fashion shows ... the 70-200 is more flexible with it's greater reach. Both are very sharp and fast af lenses. Nice bokeh too, so those should be non issues. |

This might be interesting to you (as I see you also asked about 105 DC vs 85 1.4)
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=27790753 I think you need to use 70-200 at 200mm end to get a similar bokeh to what 85 1.4 produce..which means further distance from subject is needed. In return, the background will be compressed (flattened) better. 70-200 is very heavy but it does focusing better than 85 1.4.

this is what i would choose:
portrait - go for 85mm f1.4 events like sports or fashion coverage - go for 70-200 f2.8 personally i would prefer 85mm 1.4 cos of the large aperture. i can do alot more with this lens than a f2.8 |

85 for portrait
i will choose this over 70-200 unless you are a heavy event photographer as it's much lighter. |

Yap ... 70-200 is heavy (~1.3-1.4kg). My arms were aching the next day after a night with it.
