Those're Jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none kind of lenses. Good walkabout, very good travelling, but not particularly good in any particular area. You'll want a dedicated macro lens if you're serious about macro.

18-200 is considered a superzoom lens, with a difference in focal length of more than 11 times from widest to longest.
High on the list of someone who buys such a lens is CONVENIENCE, so he/she doesn't need to change lenses often. But as with all things that are a jack of all trades, compromises are usually made.
The 2 main things are maximum aperture and image quality.

    Depends how demanding you are...

Don't rule out smaller brands like Sony, Pentax and Olympus just yet. They have something those big boys don't. Even very small brands like Fujifilm and Sigma have things that no one else is able to offer (and those are far from being gimmicks).

Fyi, it took me 3 months of researching to land me my first DSLR purchase. Was happy initially, but a month after that I discovered one brand offering was much much better at the price point I purchased. That brand was completely out of my radar on my first round of research. I switched afterall and never look back. All I can say is that, take your time.

    Heard this from somewhere before.
It's like a box chocolates, you'll never know until you take it home and eat it.

    just alittle Friday afternoon humour.

In my opinion, it's quite difficult to get any conclusive results from here. You can ask a thousand times here and you will get thousand times different answers each time.

That's because each has their own opinion about the product they use or support.

Buying a DSLR is really a personal preference thing. It's just like asking people the difference between Sprite and 7-up or Pepsi vs Coke. No one will give you a definite answer, not even the professionals or website reviews of cameras as everyone is suited to make their own choice.

I believe you have done your own homework of physically trying the 2 cameras at the shops. Then my advise next is if you can find a few friends or aquaintances or colleagues that has the similar model that you looking for. Organise a shootout trip (just 1-2hrs one will do and during lunch will be great), go out there and shoot the same objects, same timing at the same settings and using equivalent lenses.

Compare the results and see which one you like better.

it's good you've made a decision. but as for waiting for the IT show, do a search here and you'll see most would advise not to get a dslr from there. you are better of going through the listed shops here.

nonetheless, good luck on making the purchase!

my 2 cents, dun buy in IT fair ...you can go a lot of shop to get the quote like ms color, alan photo ..etc. in fact the price there is cheaper with things that you want, i dun think u wan all those freebies.

Because i bought my 500D in recent PC show, feel a bit regreted, paying more but actually for the freebies that is not really useful like heavy tripod and 320g hard disk which i can buy myself without adding the cost there.

and try not to buy the kit lens, though it is cheap. if u really into photography, then research which lens u want and buy that lens straight without cost extra for kit lens.

i think kit lenses are good to start off with and furthermore, they are cheaper than if you try to buy another lens. usually, those who purchase just bodies are the ones who already have a collection of lenses.

    Thanks for your replies~

Noted~ I'll ask around for the price with Kit lens first.. The lens i wanted is 17-55 f2.8 IS USM.. but its kind of expensive for now.. so I'll have to settle for kit lens.. >.<

Maybe after a year using the kit lens, den I might consider changing to that.. I'm also looking at macro lens.. Any good recommendations?

Also can I ask if anybody bought 50D recently locally?
