Default fixed lense or prime lense pespective effect

Can we acheive the fix lens effect of background being blur(ed) and focus object being sharp using the normal d5000 kit lens? Kit lens is a 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Lens.

My kids are so impressed with the photo effects from prime lens,

This has been asked a few times already. But with a 18-55mm, your effects will not be as prnounced. Try zooming to the maximum 55mm, set it to the largest aperture (f5.6) and get your subject as close as possible (at the minimum fopcusing distance of 0.28m)

You should see the bokeh.

great. tried tht before. not necessary always get the prime lens effect.
Am i right to say the (f5.6) should not really apply for night shots?

Yes you can... but it takes more to achieve it from a kit lens than a large aperture prime lens. To get a bokeh effect, there are a few factors, e.g. the size of the aperture, the distance between the camera to the subject vs. the subject to the background, and the focal length of the lens. Below are 2 shots taken with a normal lenses.
