Had a bit of problem shooting stuff where the background is bright and my pictures comes out all too bight and my subject is too dark if I turn off the flash. I did a bit or searching and found this setting called fill flash that can solve the problem. Tried to look for it in my D80's setting but cant seem to find it.
Could anyone explain how I can get it on my D80 and SB600? Sadly I dun have the manual as its a 2nd hand kit and it did not come with the manual. Thanks in advance.

Expose for the scene and dial in a negative setting for the flash. (-1.0 to -3.0) depending on what level of fill flash you require.

just set to flash to TTL-BL (TTL balance), adjust the flash compensation to your taste.

if ambient is too high, you may need to use FP mode for higher sync speed.

Technically, the D80 only natively sync with SB flash at 1/250 sec, where D70 can sync up at 1/500 sec natively . the high speed sync on camera body only started to supports from D90 for lower end DSLR (I think it should be available in D300/D700/D2/D3), however it is not available in D80, so there is no way as I know to use the balanced fill flash (BF) properly if there is too bright at the background, my experience is 1. use the ISO and F # to compensate the shutterspeed to 1/250 or below for D80 2. If the shutter speed can be locked within 1/250sec, then use the TTL-BL at the SB flash, nothing need to set on your camera body, it should be auto detected. 3. If I use D90, then I can leverage the high speed sync, which I always enable on the camera body, I have try to shot at 1/1000 sec with SB-800 before. |

dunno if i am reading this correctly, so i should set the shutter speed to below 1/250, set to matrix metering and let my camera body do the rest?

Sure or not? D80 flash sync is 1/200 not 1/250. On the D80 you can use High Speed Sync with speedlights like SB600, SB800 and SB900, no problem. High speed sync is not available with the pop up flash above its sync limit. |

And then meter as per normal, and allow the flash to fire at either normal TTL BL or at negative ev when using normal TTL. |

Kenneth83 - the easiest way is to set automode and bounce the flash off the ceiling (for the fill). try it and see if that is the effect u r looking for.

hmm maybe I should explain a bit more what I tried to shoot. Bascially its like having the subject stand infront of a window like thingy (suntec convenction center or expo) where the light from outside seems to be bright. I tried to shoot with flash but it seems I get my subject over exposed and I tried to shoot without flash and my subject gets under exposed.
I did a bit of searching and found that I should be doing fill flash to use the flash to fill the "dark" parts of the subject cased by shadow from the bright light behind(hope I got this right too). I would like love to bounce but the ceiling was too high also.

if yes, you need to stay away from the reflection of your flash first, set your camera flash to TTL mode, use FP if the shutter is still too slow. |

![]() can't we dial down the FEC to prevent the subject from being over-exposed by flash? (unless the shutter speed needs faster than 1/200 flash-sync of D80/D90) thanks ![]() |

Example of what I mean:
If I dun use flash my subject is too dark ![]() If I use flash, everything is too bright. ![]() from what I have gathered so far(hopefully I got it this time), I am suppose to increase the shutter speed (thus the whole 1/200 Auto FP thingy) and decrease the flash "power". Also read that increasing the aperture will help but I wanna keep the bokeh so leaving it at f/2.8 means I need to compensate by adjusting the other settings.

Correct... also compensate with a lower ISO speed and lowering the flash ev.
