Hi Guys,
I have a d90 kit with 105mm lens. I've been thinking on buying the 70-300mm zoom lens, however i'm not sure if it's a good move. These are my options: a. Sell my 18-105mm kit lens and buy the 18-200mm. They said its good enough to have the 18-200mm for all around usage? b. Keep the kit lens and just buy the 70-300mm VR f/4.5-5.6 My interests is to shoot sports (f1), animals (sg zoo). My budget is around 1000sgd. Any advise will be appreciated. thanks. |

The 70-300VR is a very good lens.. However if you wanna shoot fast moving objects i would recomended you Nikkor 80-200 F2.8. You can get the 1 Touch at below $1k or the 2 Touch for about 1.2K in the Buy n sell

If you sit close to the track, you probably need a wider lens. Anyway, 70-300VR may not be fast enough for F1. Go with other tele-zoom with f2.8, preferably AF-S. |

B. your kit lens can be good enough to cover the 18-200 as a general purpose lens with feet zooming.

The 70- 300mm VR is a great lens for at the zoo. It is the main one I use at the San Diego zoo (examples here if interested: http://www.pbase.com/jeffryz/san_diego_zoo&page=2 ) As for sports, it can be a bit slow unless you are outdoors in good light since it is f/5.6 at the long end. VR helps you keep still and limit your motion blur but it does not help if your subject is moving.

Feeler, I have the exact same setup as you. And I am also considering getting a 70-300mm VR. But I am more to shooting zoo and hopefully able to shoot some nice shots of birds. This lens is not really advisable for night sports shots if you are referring to Singapore Night F1.

I too own the D90 and a 70-300 VR. It's a pretty sharp lens i must say. Have been using it to shoot fast moving RC planes/helis. So far i'm very happy with the results. But as others have already mention it probably will only work great will sufficient lighting. If you are going to use it more often at night then i would suggest the AF-D 80-200 2.8 we well.
