Hi
I'm using a D300 as main camera and D90 as backup during my assignments. My D300 mounts flash, grip and heavy zoom lens while D90 is only mounted with a fast prime for no-flash quick portraiture/macro shots with its light weight. Prefer the D300 in terms of built quality. Sometimes its larger size gives me that special confidence esp when mounted with heavy lenses. Function-wise both are about the same. However the weather-sealing of D300 may be important to some. Live-view and video not that important for me so camera-for-camera, D300 outperforms. D90 video cmi anyway. |

do not forget that D300 has a faster focusing as well compared to D90(with D90 having the older focusing module same as that of D80)
Also the viewfinder coverage for D300 is 100%, some people may not really care about this, but it makes a big difference to me..

If you use AF-S lenses, there's almost no discernable differences between the D300 and D90. Only if you use AF-D lens for example can you see the difference. For me, the D90's AF is better than a D80 in the sense that it acquires focus faster and more accurately, close or same as a D200.

cos the body will tell how the lens how fast to AF. you will realise at lower light conditions, the lens will tend to AF much slower, cos the body cannot discern the contrast. i almost dun get that for my D300, unless shooting at really really low light... its a personal feel that the D300 has a better algorithm to discern the contrast (there is a technical term for it, but i forgot what it is...). or maybe its juz my own psychological thing to tell me that i bought a camera thats worth that additional 700 over the D90 body... |

Is it true that D90 has slight advantage over D300 on high ISO performance? I have no chance to do a apple to apple comparison. But I find the IQ at ISO1600 for D300 is fine for me. For ISO3200, i don't even dare to try it.

For comparison between D300 & D90, you might be interested to look at the following links:
Nikon D3, D90, D300 and D200 ISO 3,200 Comparison As seem in the comparison, at ISO3200 the details of the fur from the D300 is pretty weak as compared to the D90. Nikon D3, D90, D300 and D200 Sharpness Comparison |

if i'm not mistaken the d90 has slightly better noise control at higher iso, because they employ a higher noise-reduction algorithm compared to the d300
so slightly less noise, but slightly less sharp for d90 |

I just bought the D90 and taken some simple side by side comparisons. The IQ is the same.... for those who matters.
