between the 2, for a newbie, I'd recommend the D40.
Having the 2.5" LCD makes a big enough difference to me. D70's screen is too small to tolerate.
D90/D300's screen is of course (much) better still, but D40/D60/D80 screen is still acceptable.

I recently sold off my D40 kit for within your budget...

Pardon my ignorance, but is there an advantage to have a camera without an in-body focusing motor which in turn limits the AF availability of non-motorised lenses? For me, I would prefer to get a body that can do AF on any Nikon AF lens. Don't make sense to me. I'm guessing this is to drastically reduce the price of the camera, yes?

My take on this would be, cheaper cameras, reason to buy the more expensive cameras, owners of this "cheaper cam's" have to buy more expensive lenses, they eventually upgrade when they realize it AF is so useful. I really feel its just meant to make dslr's really cheap to entertain people who want to have a dslr.

I found a d70 body for $380, shutter count below 5k. Is it a good price? I'm thinking of pairing it with the d80s 18-135mm which will set be back about 250. What you sifus think about this combi?
    cheers

I think its expensive. My d70 is modded for IR and i wouldn't even sell it at that price. $300 and below would be right. Maybe $350 for a D70s

wow I've tried quoting that price and the buyers simply just ignored me. Maybe it's because I'm new.

You can always say you found a better offer. I don't think a D70 is worth that much anymore.
