Thread: What batteries do you use?

Default What batteries do you use?

There are so many brands and types of AA batteries, which one do you prefer/are using currently in terms of capacity and discharging rates?

If you don't use batteries that often and don't like charging batteries every time you want to use one, choose the hybrid Ni-MH such as Sanyo Eneloop, GP Recyko or PowerEX Imedion. All three of them are pretty much the same. They are all around (EDIT: 2100mAh).

If you want more juice from one single charge and don't mind charging them right before you use them, choose Sanyo Ni-MH 2700 or PowerEX Ni-MH 2700.

For flash, i prefer batteries that are 1.5v for the extra kick.

If you have a good charger, any rechargeable will do but the trend now is for batteries that can keep ~80% of their charge even after 2 years of non usage.

Reportage, what 1.5v?? how do you tell it's 1.5v? I'd love batteries that have a slow discharge rate but i need high capacity as well. are there any such batteries out there yet?

to make things very simple...1.5v is more powerful then 1.2v and the voltage will be written on the battery. capacity is termed as mAh.

slow self-discharging cells currently peak at 2100mAh while general NIMH batteries is much mich higher capacity. If you are the type to always recharge batteries before events, can skip the low discharge models and instead go for the higher capacity NIMH batteries.

most rechargeables are 1.2v due to the chemical compositions inside the batteries.

I can see a clear increase in power of my flash when using 1.5v alkalines so usually i reserve it for when i need to use from a distance.

I always recharge my batteries to maximum but the interval in between each shoots could range from days to weeks. would it damaged my batteries if i just use 20% - 50% each time i shoot but recharge it to 100% before each time i use it?

    depends on quality of charger.

If you know your flash well, can guess how many more times can fire before the batteries totally drained. another option is to have several sets of rechargeables on standby.

Some devices have a power indicator so can more or less show how much power remaining.

10 x Sanyo AA Eneloop 2100mAh, 4 x Powerex AA Imedion 2100mAh, 4 x GP AA 2700mAh batteries. I don't find them to have that much of a difference, because I use them in my external flash with battery pack.

My GP batteries seems to discharge fast and both energizer and sanyo batt seems to be unrechargeable no matter how many times i charge them with my GP charger. Are they spoilt?

By the way, I've seen other photogs using some black label batteries which i have never heard of those brands before, are they good?

Quite possible. But also possible that the charger is just unable to determine the status of the batteries and refuses to charge. Get a better charger for individual charging of each battery, combined with recondition and soft charging features. My recommendation: Maha MH-C800S. Got if from MS Color with 2 packs of 4xAA Imedion rechargeable batteries.

Imedion by Powerex. Very good stuffs. Holding charge much longer if not in use. Saves time and trouble if you need them short-noticed. All good camera shops have them.

Get a charger with discharge function, then you can set it to discharge then recharge.

My charger can also set the charge and discharge rate, condition the battery, etc.

A good charger will go a long way to properly condition your batteries and thus protect your investment.

Basically you will see two colors - black and white. White Eneloop from Sanyo and black Imedion from Maha's PowerEX.
