Most Japanese sword sold in Singapore is crap and too highly priced. Most of them are mere show piece made of stainless steel, not the real forged metal that will rust. They are also blunt out for importing into Singapore. I prefer to buy them from US, used to own a Zatoichi with real sharp edge. When kept, looked like a normal walking stick, it have a real hamon. Too bad, my wifey disapprove and threw it out.......

I'm considering customising a katana. Does anybody know where to get a Hello Kitty tsuba and menuki? And pink tsuka-ito?

And i am thinking of making the saya pink with a flower motif, sort of like http://blog.riflegear.com/archive/20...-cute-and.aspx, so any information on flower stickers is appreciated.

Also, the blade is differentially hardened, but was acid-etched to bring out the hamon. I think the hamon is overly ostentatious and would prefer it to be in the subtle original. Does anybody know how to reverse the etching process?

Just thought i'd share a few pics of mine.

This is the Hanwei PPK XL Light. Pretty standard specs, 28" blade with .75" sori. 14" tsuka. 2 pounds, 9 ounces. Point of balance is like 5". The bo-hi gives a nice swishing sound when the sword is swung.

The tsuka-ito is cotton. Tightly wrapped and secure. Real rayskin under the wrapping.

The tip is a standard chu-kissaki. The hamon is real, but acid-etched to give a frosty look. Not sure of the hamon style, looks like a gunome. But then production swords probably don't adhere to any established styles.

Cast iron sunburst tsuba. Hanwei says all their tsubas are museum replicas, but so far i haven't been able to find one exactly like this on the internet. By the way, the guck on the blade is the choji oil.

The menuki is a lion-dog figure.

couple of new acquisitions... a pair of pre 1980 Buck 110 folding hunters. the bottom knife is well used but still has a decent snap to the blade. top knife is in much better condition and still a solid snap with little movement in the blade.

this is a comparison between a pre-1980 (top) and a 1997 model (bottom) 110 folding hunter. note the rounded edges of the younger knife. i guess we got a little spoilt...

Interesting. A slight reverse curve in the nakago. How does this handle compared to a regular gatana? Is the hamon real? Any closeup of the tip? btw katanas are usually placed edge upwards on the kake to protect it. And the kashira on the left.
