Hi all,
To those who wants to know more about marine conservation and ways in which one can get involved in such an activity to preserve them in their natural state. Read the write-up below and if u are interested... Just mail me and i will send u the applications... there are only limited spaces available so decide fast... please help spread the word to those whom u think may find this interesting too... its something worthwhile to embark and something people are still very much unaware of. So hope to hear from u all soon... cheers Jeffrey Tay "if one wants to make a difference in life, one will find a way. if not, one will find an excuse." Beyond Lands’ End III A North Borneo Marine Conservation Project After the achievements of Beyond Land’s End I & II, a marine conservation project to north Borneo, Malaysia, Beyond Land’s End III will be a follow-up expedition in June 2004. This marine conservation Expedition is organised by the Reef Ecology Laboratory, National University of Singapore (NUS), Tropical Marine Science Institute (TMSI), hosted by the Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI) of Universiti Sabah Malaysia (UMS) and partially funded by Singapore International Foundation (SIF) http://www.dbs.nus.edu.sg/Happenings...abah/index.htm This expedition, Beyond Land’s End III (BLE3), will require about 20 volunteer divers and will run for 18 days. Being led by 3 volunteers from BLE2, consisting of an Expedition Leader, Facilitator and Scientific Officer, with support by the Department of Biological Sciences (DBS) of NUS. BLE3 aims to document the states of coral reefs in the North Coast of Sabah, to facilitate the implementation of management policies in future. The team will concentrate their efforts on the reefs around the Pulau Banggi region, with a base camp on one of the smaller islands. Conditions will be basic, where the construction of structures such as toilets and equipment sheds will be needed. Besides scientific surveys, volunteers are required to plan and carry out community interaction activities involving the locals. As part of the preparation, volunteers are expected to commit their time in the learning of entry-level marine biology, survey techniques and other necessary meetings, which will run in early February 2004. The other prerequisites of volunteers are: 18-25 years of age (preferred) Certified open water diver (minimum) Swim 200m Tread water for 3 minutes Own set of dive gear (i.e. personal gear, BCD & regulator, preferred) Applicants with boat-handling capability, leadership experience or video and photography skills will have an advantage. The dates of the expedition have not been confirmed, as such there is no deadline for application. However, due to the limited preparation time, interested individuals are encouraged to send in their application as soon as possible, so that you can be included in the mailing list. There will be a briefing for all applicants shortly after the closing date. More details of the briefing will be made known to the applicants closer to the briefing date. Interviews may be conducted if response is overwhelming. The expedition is scheduled to start between 3rd and 20th June 2004; the exact date will be released as soon as it is confirmed. We apologise for the inconvenience caused by this delay. However if you are interested in taking part in this expedition and future similar expeditions, email the organizers so that you shall be included in the mailing list to keep you up-to-date with any new developments and send in the YEP volunteer application form either by email, post or personally. Also please disseminate this information to any other individuals who would be keen on such marine expeditions. There will be a briefing for all who are interested – date to be announced. The cost of the expedition is approximately S$1,500, but SIF will subsidise 70% (up to a maximum of S$1,000) if you are a Singapore citizen or Permanent Resident (PR) and aged between 18-25 years. Applicants who exceed the age limit will also be considered on a case-by-case basis. Visit www.geocities.com/janible2 for more information. Should you have any queries, you can contact Jeffrey Tay ztay@hotmail.com, Pam Wan finipawz@yahoo.com, or Jani Thuaibah janible2@yahoo.com . the training will be about 5 evening lessons or so at NUS... and yes.. the diving is not everything... the team will be involved in some community service in the village that we stay in and as well as conducting socio-economic surveys as well...

wahhaha... hello...
well even if you're above the prefered age limit, you're most welcomed to join us as well... As certain experiences comes with the age... and we'll gladly accept and appreciate you sharing your experinces in life with the team too... so don shy shy lah... give it a try... you'll never know till you give it a shot, rite? just like photography, you need to seize the moment before the magic disappear... so snap snap snap away.. wahahhaa... Augh.. that reminded me that I still have films not yet developed... shoot too much... ![]() |
