Hi,
A pal of mine was offered extended warranty of two years by fujifilm for his S7000. It costs $140 incl GST. Is it worth it ? Thanks |

I just see his waranty card that "This guarantee does not cover repair or replacement of parts damaged by misuse, mishandling, accidents, leaking batteries, or as a result of normal wear and tear, or if the camera is tempered with, or repared by any unauthorized personnel"
In short, what does the guarantee covers ? |

That depends... If he shoots 10 frames a month, and keeps his cam in the dry box to maintain 'mint' conditin for future resale, like what many "Clubsnap WTS people" do, then NO.
But if he is like me, using the camera to the fullest, taking 500 shots a month and going to the sea, the mountains, the desert, the jungle, heck even dusty construction sites, then YES. $140 is 10% of the camera cost, and gives you not 1, not 2 but 3 years of worry free use! Worth it! Beware of the terms, though, check what is covered and what not. |

Normal wear and tear is the loss of paint, scratches on body or lens, etc. But if the insides fail, like the motor or the CCD, then certainly they'll cover. At least, that's true for my Panasonic MiniDV cam.

I don't kow about Fuji, but Panasonic fixes my camcorder for $800.00, but absorbed by warranty! What failed was the zoom, CCD and optical stabiliser (which is the whole 'eye' essentially). And it failed because I was shooting 10 times more than most other home users do!
As for the question of whether extended warranty is worth it, if you use the cam intensively, please get the extended warranty. But if it is going to be casual use, probably not worth it. Think of it like insurance, if you work in an office everyday, health insurance is not a major issue but if you work in a toxic area like a nuclear reactor (Homer Simpson), hmmm... |
