Default How Do You Pick a Lens in Camera Shop?

Newbie here, never buy a second lens other than the kit lens c/w the camera. Here I am talking about the scenario that you have already selected the model. Do you guys open many boxes, try to take some shots from each lens, and compare the image quality carefully before you make the decision which one to buy?

Hi, Visit showroom first with your camera where u can pick the one u like. Shops are not showrooms where the salesperson does not like u to test or experiment for long period of time w/o buying. At canon shown u can do that but u must bring a canon camera. Happy shopping

depends on the brand and model. For orignal makers like canon and nikon will not test much just shoot shoot and see... For third party makers best is to find a good shops recommended in Clubsnap and they have a few pcs on the shelve to test. The thrid party makers tends to have back or front focusing problem in their lens and thus you have to choose the best copy.

Dun go to those shops that do not allows testing. You risk yr money getting a lemon

About back and front focus problem, to test in the shop is a bit difficult, but can just try. Sometimes the shop only have one copy of lens, so if testing also cannot change

My humble try on the back front focus testing

buying lenses is not like buying a pair of shoes, testing as many pair of shoes as you like....

you need to know what lens you want first,
read the spec of the lens, does the lens usage suit you,
check of the reviews of the lens, are you satisfied with what you read,
check out the cost of the lens, does this lens within your budget
check out the offering price and availability from the stores
prepare your money and bring along a camera body to visit the store.

you have to do all these before you walking any store to see any lenses.
these is what we call doing homework before shopping.

I think what he meant was after u already decided on the camera lens ( already selected the model ) , do u try as many sets of for example an 50mm f1.4 in the shop.

So far for me I take a few snaps and make sure the basic functioning of the lens is working, and i go back and shoot and test at home. So far no issues. Maybe I am lucky, but never got to return and open up several new lens copies to test in shop

    I see, my bad,
usually they will open up the box and show me everything, I just mount the lens and take a few snaps, pack up, pay up and go.
I have not return any lenses to the shop, nor I need to send lenses to for exchange.
