Have you fought with a fruit knife against someone using a parang?

    Why?
what do you use it for?
The Sigma APO 70-300 DG f/4-5.6 is marginally better (but otherwise, both these lenses are in the same category). These are beginner lenses, not so fast to focus and aren't as durable in construction. But to say it's "crap" is a bit harsh. Like someone said, if you know the limitations, the lens can also produce good results. Outdoors, bright sunshine, the Sigma does produce punchy results. And one big bonus is that it's light and compact, ideal for street or travel photography, where the 70-200/2.8 might prove a bit impractical.

If you're a beginner or even of intermediate skill, these lenses represent excellent value for money.

It's not a matter of better or lousier. It's more of what your needs are (and of course, budget).
