Default White Tree Nymph

Shot at the Penang Butterfly Farm in Sep this year. This species is similar to the one found at the Zoo's Fragile Forest. As some of you may have noted, shooting in a cramped enclosure is sometimes just as challenging as the backgrounds available are less than ideal, due to the closeness of everything else.

The Penang Butterfly Farm is slightly bigger than the one at Sentosa, and has slightly better opportunities as far as backgrounds are concerned. The specimens there are also in better condition than our local offerings.

Shot with Nikkor 105mm micro @ 1/200s ; f/5.6 ; ISO 200.

Very nice. I guess brighter background enhances the details on the butt's wing, im refering to the black pattern. Yes, indeed nicer background than those shots from the Fragile forest.

You're right. Strong backlighting helps show the 'transparency' of the butt's wings. It also depends on the angle of the sunlight if the light is coming from behind the butterfly.

Our Fragile Forest is a bit dark and shady, and unless you can find the Tree Nymph perched somewhere high up near where the elevated platform is, the lower paths usually have poor backgrounds. When I first shot them at Fragile Forest (with a film camera ), I tended to blow out the whites on the butterfly's wings.
