Default Urgent: Where to get zip fixed

I just found out that my sweater's zip has been badly corroded and it cannot even budge. Don't ask me how it got to this state... I had left it in the wardrobe for quite some time as who would wear a sweater like this in hot Singapore? So now I'm going for a trip and need this sweater and fortunately I took it out today and still have time to get it fixed. I'm leaving Sunday.

Anyone knows where I can get it fixed? I need to change the 'head' (the part that you pull to zip up the sweater). The zip itself is fine as it is plastic and so did not corrode. It is a YKK zip. I'm guessing that the tailors can probably get it done but I think my zip is not very common. It is very large (the head part) and the part that you pull can move from the front to back... doesn't look very common. So I'd like to check where I can find a wide range of YKK zips and get it fixed. Also, do the tailor have the zips or I would need to buy one from somewhere else and bring it to them to get fixed?

    Thanks.

Also, a note of curiosity as this is the first time I've ever seen a zip become like this and I was shocked! Has anyone else got this before? I'm not talking about the zip getting stuck and things like that. I mean the metal head of the zip got corroded - part of the zip became white, powdery stuff and part of it was flaking off and part of it became deformed. Sighhh... hope I can get it fixed. It's a good sweater.

Does anyone know what caused this so I can prevent it from happening again? The humidity is obviously one factor. But any particular residue that caused this? Detergent, salt, etc. ??

I have the same thing with my gym glove.

so i reckon, its probably your sweat.

now i hand wash my glove, and when i wash it with soap, i'll zip & unzip a few times to wash away the salt content or whatever that may clog the zip.

I also did suspect salt but this part is unlikely to encounter much salt leh. The corroded part is the base, and not the part that you pull. If it is salt, it should corrode at the part that you pull. Besides, I hardly even touch the for-pulling part of the zip cos there is a long nylon piece from the zip for you to pull, so i pull that instead. And there is a flap on the jacket that goes over the entire zip to conceal it so the head, especially, is covered up when the jacket is zipped. So in all, it should experience minimal external elements. I suspect it is the washing detergent actually. There will be some residue of detergent left on all the clothes. Maybe some chemical in the detergent, when oxidised, becomes corrosive. Sighhh...

Before you try anything, just give WD40 a shot. It could work......

WD40 will not work, because the head is already corroded to the point where part of it is gone and even deformed. So it is already not the normal shape. I'm talking some pretty serious corrosion here, not surface only.

I don't think anyone can imagine what it has become.
I myself got a rude shock!

I intend to take it to a tailor/ seamstress.
Just checking if I need to provide the zip or they will have it?
My zip does not seem very common so I am worried.
Anyone knows where to buy YKK zips? It is a YKK zip.

    YKK zippers the best meh?
This zip that corroded is a YKK zip. It was on a Nike Thermafit fleece jacket.
I just know that YKK is the largest manufacturer of zips.
I've seen their zips on the cheapest things and also on the most expensive stuff!
    Very wide range indeed!

Alteration shop tailor is your best bet for changing zip and if Spotlight doesn't have it, then you need to go to Jalan Sultan, Textile Centre where Maybank is and look for the haberdashery shops at the back of the building. Should find your YKK accessories.
    GOD Bless.

why don't you just bring it to a seamstress and see if they have what is necessary to change the zips. they are specialist in stuff like that, you would expect that they have a ready stockpile of zips to use on your items.
