asus or acer or dell or hp/compaq student laptop.

warning about dell and acer though..

Dell has crap customer service, but products have lower tendency to spoil than Acer's

Acer has crappier customer service, products can last you 1 year without repair hoseh alr

    Hi guys,

Thanks for all the contribution and suggestion!

Some personal experience, I will not, i mean NEVER, consider Asus and Lenovo after my personal and office's constant unpleasant experience with reliability

i had 4 dells for since 2002. the previous 2 dells lasts 7 years before crashing on the ram. uneconmical to repair. but dell is reliable and software is provided and u can actually reload the entire system after crashing it.

If Lenovo is not your cup of tea, probably can try Toshiba or HP

    Hello all,

I wanna try to continue this not so old thread rather than creating a new one. My notebook is due for replacement and my options are down to 3 as follows:

    Acer Aspire Timeline
13" screen, Core2Solo 1.4Ghz, integrated graphics, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, HDMI output, 6cell battery, Vista Home Premium, no DVD drive

    HP Pavilion DV2
12" screen, AMD Athlon 1.6Ghz (Not dual core, additional USD100 to upgrade), 1GB DDR2, 250GB HDD, HDMI output, 4cell battery, Vista Home Premium, external DVD±RW
Max RAM is 4GB since i think we can get a single piece of 4GB but might be more expensive to upgrade compare to 2x2GB.

    Toshiba Satellite Pro u400
    13" screen, Dual Core T4200 2Ghz, integrated graphics, 1GB DDR2, 250GB HDD, external DVD±RW

Unfortunately, Macbook is out of my SGD1,000 budget. Im looking for a lightweight laptop around 1.6-1.8kg that I can carry around, photo editing will not be heavy. I wanna add RAM to max, but some model prob only allow up to 2GB - so wondering whether i need >2GB.

Appreciate if you can share any opinions on the above choices.

    Thank you and good night.

    i doubt there is 1x 4gb DDR2 Sodimm. there is however 1x 4gb DDR3 Sodimm.

just wait a while more (not maybe a while, its like 2 IT fair more...) for Win7 laptops. unless can upgrade, but i find upgrading tedious... esp if you already have programs inside, any conflicts = gged.

sorry to hijack this thread but just like to seek opinion on samsung laptops. Actually I just got to know tat samsung actually produces laptops when i went to Best denki yesterday. Saw one going for $999. As i am quite a noob in IT, would appreciate all recommendations for a decent laptop going at < $1000. slightly above 1k also ok . Thanks guys ! =)
