Default Stuck between a rock and a hard place..

Previously, I had applied for overseas internship to both Japan and Australia. I didn't get selected for Japan as they had already chosen my 2 other friends.

But I was chosen to go Australia with another classmate.

I was really looking forward to going to Japan, but now that I'm only able to go Australia, I'm kinda disappointed. You can say that I'm half hearted about going to Australia.

I know I can experience many wonder things over there. Money is not that big of an issue but the paid attachment here is something attractive to me. 6 months, each month at least $660

While for overseas attachment, I get no pay but it's for the experience.

I'm confident of adapting myself over there. It'll probably be for 4 months.

Just afraid that I might miss some of the things here, the culture or I might even get discriminated over there (Brisbane).

    Anyone can offer any advice?

    Thanks.

mate. you get discriminated everywhere you go so as long as you're not the majority. why don't you make do with what you are given, go with an open mind. who knows, maybe Australia and her beauty will charm you as it did for me.

Just go for it. There will be set backs. Learn from these setbacks and be a stronger person.

If you are considering coming to Australia, may I make a point ???

Don't go to Australia and think that Brisbane/Sydney/Melbourne/Perth is what Australia is all about.....

There are so many beautifull towns and places to see in Australia.

So many beautifull rain forests, beautifull beaches, beautifull islands, and me to see.

There is discrimination where ever you go.... don't let it bother you (you are a child of the earth)..

This is your world.... explore it

Japan/Australia/Singapore all have cities with lots of people, But here in Australia you also have beautifull country

I can't agree more. a lot of my friends who coop themselves up in the city think that Melbourne = Australia. but there's so much more beauty out there in terms of the landscape, the scenery, and the sheer wilderness of the Aussie outback. the red rock really is beautiful if you take a bit of time to go explore it, off the beaten track where few or no tourist track to.

    G'day!

Before you come to Australia can I ask you how good is your kungfu?

I have a black belt in karate and I live in Sydney for the past 5 years all in one piece.

I don't go out very often. If I go out it's with five other kungfu masters.

    Hello Sion

I spent some time in Sydney and the general view here in QLD was be carefull in Sydney after dark.

I used to get trains at midnight to outer Sydney and never had any reason to bring out my AK47 at any time I was there

Everywhere is dangerous if you appear dangerous to people

I just think.... there is so much to see and if you huddle up and stay at home because the news tells you too....... sad.

    I could not agree more

There are MANY beautifull places to see here.

Australia is also very close to NewZealand (another beautifull country), but don't do the cities.

When I first visited Singapore I was greeted by many friends that I had met via Club Snap.

Why not join a photography club here in Australia via the net and do the same thing

Try..... http://www.photoforum.com.au/ you will feel at home there

I spend 4 yrs in australia but that was in late 1990's before coming to singapore, in Melbourne especially, before the crown casino is built there.
I walk a lot after dinner admiring the suburban gardens and never met any racist.
A lot means after eating dinner at 6pm, I walk and walk till 9 pm during summer time.

May be I play it safe because I did not go clubbing where trouble are bound to happen.
May be you should too so your experience is better.

recently there have been an increased incidence of racially motivated attacks on our Indian brethren by probably young and gutless teenagers. but just because that is the case doesn't mean it's an every day occurrence. I mean, as usual with any metropolitan country, just exercise a bit of common sense and tact when you're going out late at night. any big city can be (and will be) dangerous if you don't use any common sense.

    what am I talking about?

do not unnecessarily provoke people. try not to go to secluded areas on your own. if taking public transport, make sure you don't take last trains/buses/trams, and sit in the carriage nearest the driver's compartment if you have to. you know, just stuff like that. not sure about Brissy but I know in Sydney, trains have security compartments (where according to a Sydneysider friend, just means the police will be at the next station waiting approximately where the security compartment will be when it pulls into the station to immediately assist) so you can stand there if you're afraid.

and don't let such occurrences deter you. honestly. can't stress how beautiful this country is.

Bro , you should be lucky you qualify for OA.
Since like you said, go there for the learniing experience and try to make new friends there.
You never know whether when you can use their help.
I stayed in down under when I was younger. I dun think you will be staying in the city but more likely in the suburbs.
If you are afraid of hate crimes, like some of the bros said avoid confrontation and never go out alone.

    Jus my 2 cents.

Don't mind if I hijack this thread.
I will be in Adelaide in a weeks time for a workshop in one of the University in Adelaide. The H1N1 is on the rise and the problem happening to the Indian students is quite alarming but that's not stopping me

Anyone can give an insight of what I can do or see there. Thanks
