Default 5060 quickie comments

been playing with it yeah..
disclaimer:
-most of my responses is negative, because I compare it to other cameras.
-you can disagree of cos but I am not going to argue over its merits or what until (as usual) name calling starts...
-if not mentioned probably it's good enough not to irritate me.

shutter lag? HMMMM.. I dunno about other ppl but it's still quite crap to me...
there's still a clickety-click feel before anything fires..
that's shooting in MF ie no AF lag - I am not going to spend days trying to optimise shutter lag.

AF:
- I covered the two passive LEDs above the lens. NO EFFECT.
- if your object is non-macro -- quite fast
- if your object is macro and below, gd or bad lighting, it still does the tuttuttuttuttut of the 5050...
- blardy AF light kept scaring the hamsters and arowana.. so much for assist, more like a-cyst
- w/o any lamp, the AF is no better than my Xt
* suspect lens movement a major factor, as macro shifts the elements more. maybe oly shd get USM.

MF:
- concur with friend -- it's a JOKE. the wheel is not used here. uses the up/down dpad, which is located off-grip --ie need to install 3rd and 4th joints on your thumb.

S-Macro:
flash is disabled.
why second guess me? I rather have the flash and then use some card or diffuser my way.
so if u thinking of shooting shrimps, good luck, have to get the $xsss strobe anyway.
3cm is good, BUT can you get that close?
the normal macro with flash is limited to 20cm which sux vs my Xt.

LCD refresh is fast, almost realtime if there's sufficient lighting..
read write times ok, nothing fantastic.. of cos using the 256 sandisk 1x CF and the free XD 32 meg.
files are HQ 5mp at 800k~1meg for my shots

Batt life: first charge took forever. few and far between.

image quality:
- not bad. typical olympus "grain". got details in shadows.
- NR is ok. kills colour noise.
- typical flash and colour exposure is typical olympus -- good. plus can adjust sat and contrast and sharpness.

ergonomics:
- new moded grip is a bit shallow but feels great
- the dpad is too low to use -- need to let go of nice nice grip.
- rubbered optical VF - but never used it...too small and no nose room.
- love the histogram and area boxes, even if they do kill the framing somewhat...
for those who dunno, two modes of histograms -- one is the std bar graphs in realtime. and the other are tiny boxes that appear on the live picture, red for over blue for under, like some strategy game. BUT it's disruptive if u're following an object.

I carried out my hamster test and fish tank test, which I think are good guages of underwater shooting LOL...
hamster test by right is a intermediate test - they dun move tht fast and stripey fur gives good AF. BUT lighting is daylight -1EV.
arowana test is a killer - jittery young aro, not-too-good water+lighting. so far only manual focusing (via hand movements) consistently scores.

conclusion? if it's your first prosumer, maybe you'll like it. My CS lurker diver fren (come out ya?) managed to pry a review unit from me and he didn't like it.
if it's your 2nd+++ prosumer... stick to 5050 if u dive. 717 or G5 if u don't dive.

if it is the same as 5050, flash can still be activated at super macro mode. you see, super macro is about 3cm. for land, at that kinda distance, it is illogical to have flash. it is different for underwater though. it stil can be done.

dunno, tried but the flash is disabled... maybe I got something mode on or off
NR disables burst, and burst disables flash. hmm too much second guessing?
the thing is it's 3cm to 20cm, just putting a hand around the flash is alreaady a diffuser liao LOL...
anyway these all my pov...
waiting for tmw to take the E1.. woohoo...

the blue boxes are the underexposure indicators, red for over..
beivied: changing to super auto disables the flash...

me a bit lazy to post here how to do it, haha.. shagged by last night's meeting. let you know another day. or someone else can teach also la.. lanxx? anyway, in short you change to slave flash only first, then change to slow flash then you change to super macro mode.

denizenx, it could be done on the 5050, donno about the 5060, but it is more of a procedure then straight forward setting.

when selecting camera, what has to come into mind is why you are buying this camera, why are you even considering it, what are you using it for.

for diving, i think olympus is really penetrating the market. 5060 is a further step descending into the waters, even the flash and additional lenses has their own housings (at least thats what i am told) anyone know otherwise?

C5050 can support wireless TTL ah? Actually I don't even knows how it works. I think it doesn't comes with those fibre optic cables.

TTL is through the lens. can ma? anyway fl20 flash is not very powerful, even for land use, let alone water. IMHO, not very worth it, considering the strobe power, fixed position of the flash etc... but may be otherwise la...

20%?
I think the casing won't be cheap, then u need to purchase optional tray and not forgetting dunno what cables you will need. I think it will add up to maybe like 50-60% of the price of a average strobe at least...

This are the recommended retail price in Japan:
Flash FL-20 : 15000 yen
UW casing for flash: 28000 yen
there is 2 flash bracket or holder: 6000 yen and 8000 yen
Not sure if the cables are included, anyway it already cost about 50000 yen which is about S$785 according asia1.com.sg's converter
