Just flashed it.
I can control my aperture easily now. Not that I've been using the video function a lot. Maybe it's time to learn a bit more on video... I like that the dof preview button is disabled when I review shots. Kept on tripping it when I'm reviewing a series of shots. |

Didn't see the 270EX flash support in this firmware. Anyone know if it is already supported?

I downloaded and installed it with no problems this morning. Briefly tried the manual control in movie mode. SWEET! I just bought the 5D2 last week, and ALMOST bought a Nikon lens adapter and Nikon lens just to get manual aperture control, but I'm really really glad I waited.
I love the fact that you can select auto ISO and it behaves like it's basically in Av mode. Just set the aperture and shutter speed, and let the camera will automatically adjust ISO from, it looks like, ISO 100 all the way to H1 (12,800?). Seems to work great. The ISO select screen is a little goofy looking, looks a little unpolished, but works fine. This MIGHT make the video feature actually usable even by my wife. If the autofocus was just a little better . . . |

With such a shallow depth of field with DSLR, it is not advisable to have auto focus. The focus will keep changing its focus from one subject to the next. Best to learn how to focus manually. Better that way.

Does that mean you cannot control iso level in manual video mode?

^ You can. The auto mode is just available if you want the camera to choose ISO for you after you set the shutter speed and aperture.

BTW, has anyone tried using slower cards like the SanDisk Ultra for full HD movie recording? Wondering if the card is fast enough or would there be any side-effects. Am presently using Extreme IIIs and Ducatis but would be nice if I can get myself like a few 8GB Ultra (save cost) for long video recording.

Hi Rendition,
I formatted my sandisk Ultra II card for this upgrade and right after firmware upgrade I tested the video, still the same. Only allows me to record about 10 second of video and stop.

I'm using a cheap-o 16GB 133X maybe lexar or kingston (so cheap, can't remember the brand) card with no problems whatsoever recording HD video. The manual says you need a card with > 10 MB/s transfer rate, which means theoretically anything > 67x. Seems like 133x is no problem.
Also, I have yet to run into a situation where the buffer has filled and I have to wait for the camera to write to the card. I often ran into that situation with my 1DS Mk II with the same card. So clearly this 5D2 is much faster in writing to the card, even with the non-UDMA non-ultrafast cards. Actually my biggest problem is transferring back to the computer. Using my (also cheap-o) USB card reader I see avg transfer rates of 8MB/s, which takes something like 20 mins to get all 16GB off the card and onto the stupid computer. |

Hmm...I did not encounter this problem before and after the upgrade...Though I hardly use the video feature, is this a common problem with other 5D2 users?

The problem is just for video (for me at least). But eric seems not to have this problem. Maybe its my setting but can't be sure. But UDMA for me is ok with video. I think anything above 333x is good in my opinion. I am looking at some 16GB or 32GB 333x or higher CF card on ebay. Cost around S$175 I think.

Ya, I am finding this out the hard way also. In the past with DV tapes, I can just record while playing the video stream via Firewire cable. Although slower but since you are viewing the video at the same time, you are preoccupied and hence not too bothered with it. But now with the recorded video files up to 3GB in size, it will seem to take much longer to copy the files over.

It's strange that you're having what seem like card speed problems. I'm literally using like the cheapest 16GB card I could find. I guess I paid maybe S$70 or something for it. Maybe I got lucky . . .
