Default Did I buy a wrong Filter

I am new in photography. I went to Funan on Sunday looking for a circular polarizer for my new D90 (my first DSLR). It was quite late (around 8pm) and a lot of shops are closing down and we were in a rush. An uncle from this shop showed me a brand that I had no idea and I showed no interest. He later showed me a Hoya filter and quote me $120. I was not interested and he kept cutting the price. In the end, I bought that filter at $98.

After taking a closer look when I reached home, I found that it is a Hoya PL (Polarizing) filter. There are only Hoya 67mm PL JAPAN printed on the edge of the ring. I think I may have got a wrong filter and I doubt if I have also paid a highly marked up price for this filter!

Can anyone tell me if I have got a wrong filter at a wrong price? Thanks a lot.

PL = linear polariser

So we recommend that you choose a PL-CIR filter unless you have a manual focus camera which has no beam splitter.
as to why you didn't try or test it out, or read up properly, that always never fails to confound me.

chill bro..TS said that he is new to DSLR already.
I think he joined when he was still using a PnS?

Anyway, PL filters as mentioned by night86mare are more suitable for SLR cameras.
However, I suspect that you have been overcharged for a HOYA PL filter (67mm)

I advise that you go back and ask for a refund or exchange.
Print the page from HOYA stating that PL are more suitable for SLR.

http://www.hoyafilter.com/products/hoya/gf-04.html

Why dont you get a "B+W UV-Haze 010 MRC F-pro" if you just want a quality protection.
The 67mm version will probably cost less than S$70.00

number 1 lesson you can learn from ClubSnap, Always do your homework before buying anything,
#2, do not buy thing at impulse, especially you have not idea about the things, even it seem is a good deal.
#3, only go to recommended and reputable shops mention in Clubsnap.

anyway, just go back the shop, tell the uncle nicely, the filter he sold you, it won't work on your camera, after you have double check on ClubSnap, and people here recommend you to get XXX filter instead, you wish to change it now.

grainpixel, catchlights and night86mare, thanks for all your advises! I will go back to the shop and tell the uncle.

night86mare, I was diving deep down here admiring all the photos taken by clubsnap members. I hope I can post some of my photos soon

eow, I believe it is not a good idea to talk about the name of the shop here. Who knows if the uncle also made a mistake?

I was using Canon S2 IS for the last 4 years+. It is a nice camera and I pickup the basic of aperture, shutter speed with this camera. I saw the limitation of my S2 IS and hence bought the D90. Hope I can learn more from you guys from this point onwards. Thanks!

PL will work with you S2 IS but not your D90. PL usually costs much less than CPL for the same diameter. Just go back and change to a CPL. Hope you can get a reasonable price from the uncle. You might want to check on the CPL price before you go there so you have some idea how much it will cost.

I revisited the shop again today. I went to CP and AP before the visit to check out the price of the filter. Both CP and AP are not selling the Hoya PL filter anymore and they are selling Hoya CIR-Polarizing filter at $70++.

I talked to the uncle who I bought the filter from and he insisted that he didn't make any mistake and I shouldn't compare the price from other shops with them. I requested to exchange the Hoya 67mm PL (Polarizing) filter for a Hoya 67mm CIR-Polarizing filter and he asked me to top up another $45 !

I was quite pissed off with this offer. After further arguing on the price and model of the filters, I left the shop. My wife later suggested me to exchange the filter for other things with equal value from the shop, instead of exchanging for another filter. I thought this could be a better solution.

I returned to the shop later and approached another staff, which also saw the incident early-on. He was friendlier and offered to discuss and resolve the argument. However, he still requested me to top-up another $24 for the Hoya 67mm CIR-Polarizing filter. I suggested to exchange the filters for memory cards and he agreed.

Here is what i get with $10 topup in the end.
2 x Panasonic 8GB SDHC Class4 memory card
1 x Kingston 2GB SD memory card.
These costed me a total of $108.

I believe I could get cheaper memory cards than these, but I believe this is the best that I can get from this shop.

I went to CP and get my Hoya 67mm CIR-Polarizing filter at $72.40

This is a good lesson. Just like what bro night86mare said, it is better to read-up properly or test out the thing before making a purchase. Hope other bro here can learn from my experience as well.
