Thread: Need some input on Prosumers: Olympus, Panasonic, Nikon, Canon

Default Need some input on Prosumers: Olympus, Panasonic, Nikon, Canon

I've never used any before, and I would want to get one.

Am into take anywhere and shoot anywhere.

Just this weekend, have gone for a concert, and my gf brought with her a Fujifilm normal compact (cannot remember model). Not much of a zoom. Thus cannot take too many good pictures due to the distance.

Hence, hopefully I can get some inputs for the above brands, regarding their capabilities such as response time, zoom capability, colours, ISO, settings with a bit of manual tweaking will be welcomed.

I have seen some sample pictures over at steves digicams, and I found the Olympus to give nicer colours (red seems red compared to the other brands, green are more green).

Am considering Olympus SP-570UZ (or 590UZ), Panasonic DMC LX3 (but not enough zoom, hearsay there's lens attachment, but no confirmation so far), Canon G10, Nikon P90.

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The Sony HX1 looks good but expensive, can consider the H20 which is compact and has 10X zoom.

    but not the same.

I have found olympus pictures to be richer (comparable with Fujifilm), colleague used to own one before selling it to make way for Nikon D90. I quite like how it looks (pictures), but would like more inputs from people who are using.

    Now I'm choosing among

    1. Olympus SP-590 UZ
    2. Fujifilm S100FS (but barrel very long)
    3. Nikon P90

Yes, Olympus & Fujifilm have very cams and their pictures colours are very nice. Either is fine actually. Have you tried the cams to see how's the user interface?

I have tried the olympus 570 borrowed from colleague for a while back last year. It's not bad, considering the controls are fairly simple yet complex.

Hadn't been able to try the fujifilm yet.

I think the olympus may win my choice by a margin due to the zoom

You can also check out Lumix TZ7, the successor to TZ15 which has received many good reviews. It has 12x zoom with HD video in a smaller compact size.

I had once the FZ5, similar to those you have shortlisted. Their size are not small and they do not produce SLR quality, so it's like not here nor there.

I was thinking, if you want quality, then DSLR is the only way to go. And if you want compact size with good zooms, then TZ7 is worth checking out.

    Hi, thanks for the comments.

I have a Canon 450D already, cannot bring into concerts.

Hence would like a more compact solution.

Will also look at your recommendations.

Can consider Panasonic lumix LX3 for taking low light pictures.

IC, then definitely I believe TZ7 meets your requirement of compact size with long zoom.

The rest you shortlisted are not really any smaller than your 450D...

Even I find LX3 quite difficult to hide in pocket with it's protruding lens/cap...

they are physically smaller than the 450D, by at least one times. rough gauge is 450D is more than a palm's length, the rest fits within the palm.

my colleague used to have 570uz, so it's not that big.

but you are right, TZ7 quite fits the requirements. thanks for the additional recommendation.

i think it will be great for normal picture taking.

it just loses when a person wants to zoom.
