Default canon 35mm f2 lens mount

Hi,

Got my 35mm from a fellow CSer.
When i mounted the lens on my 450D, it felt stiff to turn.
I've had other lenses with metal mount, but they weren't as tough to turn as the 35mm.
Is this the case for all 35mm f2?
Any idea if it'll do damage on my cam body?

My 35mm feels ok when I mount it. Maybe a little tighter than normal, but doesn't seem too abnormal to me.
Then again, I've only had mine for a few days.

firstly, when you tested the lens before buying it, did you test the lens on your camera body? if you had noticed this problem then you might not have gotten it.

ahh, thats where you made a mistake dude. always bring your own camera with you to deal. if you're selling something and the buyer doesn't bring his/her camera... thats his/her business. but it is very important to use your own camera.

you're dealing with something that values 100s of dollars.

Well, perhaps this is a lesson you can learn. Always test out gear the way you'd want to use it.

If you suspect it to be a major problem, bring it to Canon for a check.

I am sure he will make good use of your advice in his future purchases, in the meantime:

-- I have checked and compared my copy of the 35mm f/2 with a couple of other lenses (trying on a different camera than your 450D), and none of them is as tight as the 35mm! Which makes me conclude that (odd as it might be), your lens is exhibiting normal behaviour..

Hope that helps

There were some 35mm f/2s that were released with mounts that were too tight. Go to CSC and see if they can rectify the problem.

I bought mine only like 2 months ago.. I did not bother me (in fact I did not notice it till I read this post) I will live with it not that there is anything wrong with CSC but there is more to life than spending time at CSC Vivo City because the mount is a bit tight

correct me if i'm wrong but if this is a common problem with the lens, i'm sure Canon won't charge for adjusting the defect.

I have no idea if it is a common problem with the lens. You might be right.

All I can tell you though as a frequent user of the lens, is that I use it trouble-free on the 5D MKII, I bought it new (thus if it is a manufacturing problem as you indicate then definitely batches produced 2 months ago have this "problem"), its a bit stiffer to mount than other lenses that I use, shoots fine, thought of selling it in order to switch to the 35mm f/1.4 (after using the 24mm f/3.5 TSE with very good results) but now decided to keep it.

Personally, I don't have time to take it to Canon, or to be away from it for a day, if the only problem is "its a bit stiffer to mount" then I am fine with it. Your mileage may vary based on your own circumstances

Hmm for me this lens is more or less fixed on my 400D, hardly change it for any other lens ever since I got it in February this year. I don't have this problem though. The lens mount turns smoothly enough for me.
