Dear fellow CSers,
I recently sent in one of my prime for calibration as it does seems to focus correctly, after I collected it. I notice there are many small specs of dust in it. (Much more than what I have sent it, as the lens is practically new.) I tried taking some pics but seems like it doesn't affect the pics. Are they able to clean it free for me since it's under warranty? ![]()

man,you are not alone.i send in my lens clean.after calibrate one of them got a bit more dust.they claim never open up and is just electronic calibration.
And yeah.does not affect image quality.but you can dream on abt free cleaning.they told me for L-180,non L-100.

im not saying you guys are wrong, but it could be a matter of perceptiveness.
you probably didnt pay as much attention to checking as compared to when you just got it back from a service centre and wanting to check for problems. |

The dust probably went in during calibration.

Y not take a picture before u send.. print 2 copies with a statement showing before cleaning
& ask them to sign before u leave. Give them 1 copy n u keep the other 1. |

They did an electronic adjustment as mentioned. I called back and they told me to bring it down, if got dust then they'll clean it for free. While they also advise me that if they clean it, they need to disassemble the whole lens then re-align and recalibrate the whole thing again. So I'm going down to see what they can do.

yeah i think so too. i think if pic not affected...better not do that....diassmble and connect again.i remember someone mentioned before after that.there is no guarantee it will be better either cause they don't do it in a clean room.
unless picture quality becomes damn bad... anyway over time all lens collect some amt of dust.rather enjoy the shooting then to whole day worry abt the lens condition..use also don't use in peace...

After I re-calibrated the camera due to back focus, dot stains start appearing every now and then. I am very certain that the camera do not have this issue before the repair. Got worse over last weekend, saw so many dots and "bloopers" in the pics. No choice got to pay for cleaning services which they charged around S$21.40 though still under warranty. I am one who rather bring another camera body with lens attached than to change lens in unfavorable condition. Just wondering if these dots are actually oil stains, esp after using auto cleaning sensor, the dot shape turn to "blooper" form.

calibrate the camera?
isn't it calibrating the lens to the camera, and not the other way around? technically calibration is done electronically. to do it physically is too time consuming. is your camera the 1DIII? cos there is a known issue... |

for sigma, im very sure the calibrate the lens to the body. cos the technician just writes the new focus data into the lens. im pretty sure they would do the same thing at canon, although i have no personal experience. they would simply modify the data on the AF chip. |
