recently i've got this problem with my lens. Whenever i set the appeture to anything more than 4.0 i.e. 4.5 onwards and whenever i zoom my lens out, the shutter opens but refuse to close and Err 01 will appear. Which means to say right now i can only shoot at 24mm or if i wanna zoom in i can only shoot at F4.0.... anyone has encountered this problem before? am currently in china travelling and i need my lens up urgently. Appreciate the help...

Call up the service center there. If you bought here, you may be able to fix the problem there. Canon Sg allowed the product to be warrant in China IIRC... I know you may not bring your warranty cards, but you may just try. I will if I'm in that situation.

If by "the shutter opens but refuse to close", you actually mean the lens' aperture stops down but refuse to open, then the problem is your the aperture blades (3rd section) of your 24-105 has gone faulty. When you have this problem, the symptoms are as follows. It will not have a problem when you shoot with the aperture set at f/4 because it is the max aperture where the blades are fully opened anyway so you can shoot at any zoom setting. But when you set the aperture to smaller than f/4, you can only shoot at or near the widest zoom at 24mm. When you try to zoom in with the aperture set at anything smaller than f/4 and when you try to take a photo, the aperture blades will stop down, get stuck and refuse to open (nothing to do with the camera's shutter). You can free the aperture blades by zooming out to 24mm and pressing the DOF preview button. You can also use the DOF preview button to test if what I've described mirrors the problem you are facing. FYI, it will take about 2 weeks to repair at CSC, cost is about S$250+.
