Smile HonlPhoto Light Modifiers...cool, IMO

popped by ruby today to get a roll of BnW film. on my way back, i saw at CP that they were stocking up on HonlPhoto products. those of you who dunno abt them, read this.

i read abt HonlPhoto's light modifiers on Strobist before. so, i was quite intrigued by them cos of the rave reviews i've been reading online. got hold of the Speed Strap, the 1/4" Speed Grid and the 8" Reflector/Snoot combo. CP also sells the other Honl accessories and also the lighting combo packs. since i dun need the warming gels and gobo (apparently, they also have something dat look like a beauty dish...), i din buy them. but, those interested, the package CP is selling is priced reasonably for a complete set of items.

after doing some test shoots... i'm sold.

i popped my test figurine into my light tent (pardon the background, din iron it). the Sb800 is set on a light stand 45-deg to the figurine. i fire it off via CLS using another SB800. ISO at 200, using a AFD35/2 @ f8. WISIWYG, only resized for uploading.

with SB800 diffuser shooting straight on

with Honl reflector

with Honl snoot (actually it is just wrap the reflector into a tube around the speed strap)

with the Honl grid

between the SB800 diffuser and the Honl Reflector, the results are very visible. the shadows are less harsh.

ctd...

ctd...

shot my kids using the reflector

shot my son using the snoot

shot my girl with the grid

IMO, this set of Honl modifiers really works. i've used lumiquest products b4. i din really like the bulkiness of the softbox, and wasn't really happy with the 80-20 bounce. can't wait to try these stuff on my fren's wedding next week!

i think our CS strobbists would love the Honl modifiers... unless they have already been using them?

honl stuff are adapted from the DIY grids and snoots that most of the guys already tried actually. of course the built is so much better than DIY stuff though.

the reflector is more like a bounce card right?

i saw another bounce card thingy for sale at CP. some bouncecard that u can change the color from white to gold to silver. that one looks cool.

yup. it is supposed to act like a bounce card. but the material used is flexible (which is why it is also a snoot) and IMO, seems more reflective than the bounce card. mebbe later i shld try it again, comparing with the jusBounce bouncecard with the honl reflector...

oh yeah. i also saw dat colour bounce card. according to the label, it is "warm", i guess becos they use warming gels (it is actually a multi-gel piece). something like how McNally would do - pop a tungsten gel on his sb900 to get dat orangey glow?

here's the results. sb800 pointing straight up, no diffuser cap on. i used my 17-35/2.8 lens. think the exif is still present.

jusbounce

honl reflector

the reflector bounces back more light back onto my kids (all things being equal). WYSIWYG.

i think the gold piece makes the skin tone more warm than tungsten gel though. thanks for the test on the honl stuff. i was interested in how they sell flags as well.
