Hi, anyone use EF 28-300mm L IS USM? how's the performance? Heard the image quality is not good as 70-200mm f2.8 L, is that true? & is that the weight is a big problem? I am a little tried of thinking bring which lens to go out sometimes. So thinking to set this lens as next target. Last question: how much is it in Singapore? In USA probably about USD 2400 (Adorama Camera price as bench mark). I want to find it more before I make up my mind.

You can refer to the canon lens price list, in the price guide section. (last known price... may not be accurate)

It can be pretty heavy I think.. You might want to try it out before committing to it. Image Quality wise, of course 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM will be better IMO.

Think this lens is around 1.7kg. If i can afford, this lens will be the only lens on my 5D.

Do a search like Canon 28-300 reviews, and also do a flickr/Pbase search for photos taken with that lens.
I suspect there are far more users worldwide than here in SG, and may offer you much more real-life feedback, as well as actual photographic samples. |

But at $3K+, it's really quite a lot.

thanks guys for the information. I have a 70-200mm f2.8 non IS lens. the image is really sharp, but the only problem is the wide angle zoom portion, which is 20+ to 70mm. So interested to upgrade to this monster. The weight is really a concern, read a few reviews from US, it is really heavy to take it around. but consider if you need bring several lens together at same time, probably this even saves some total weight. currently my 70-200 f2.8 is about 1.3kg and this monster is about 1.6kg, so it should still be ok to manage. anyone use it now can provide some real experience?

There's no f/2.8 on this lens.

Either way, both would be a better companion to the 70-200, rather than getting one superzoom (and one with a slow aperture at that) to replace the roles of both.

Hi Madbull, I also own the 70-200mm L non-IS. Even though it's an excellent lens that spoils me, I still find that it's important to have an effective 35mm carry-around. It's not very convenient to lug nearly 2kg; very frustrating when you find a candid moment and have to operate a Russian tank to shoot a bee.
One suggestion it to get one of the fast primes, either 24mm or 35mm F1.4 to cover the wider angles; perfect for those low-light, close quarter indoor shoots. |

Ya, i know this lens has no f/2.8, my question is in generally, how much will be the difference between the 3 aperture in terms of speed and IQ?

From "Canon Photo Camera Lenses Price Guide II", EF 28-300mm f3.5-5.6L IS USM - $4599 (RRP) | $2900 (CP); just called CP, initial offer is $3950, after some neg, they are willing to sell at $3871 in cash. real expensive lens! Anyone know when is the price for $2900? is that price hiking so much when we got pay cut???

f/2.8 and f/5.6 is two stops apart. That means a shutter speed that's 4 times as fast. You can't use aperture to judge image quality. You should know that.
